  • Secluded working farm site between Okehampton and Hatherleigh
  • A 15-minute drive to Dartmoor National Park; 45 minutes to the coast
  • Barbecues, campfires and dogs welcome on site
Devon can sometimes get quite busy with visitors – but even in peak season you’ll be well away from all the crowds when you stay at Norleigh Mill Farm. The simple grass pitches here are part of a working farm in a secluded spot between Hatherleigh and Okehampton – just the spot for a quiet break in rural west Devon. This is a proper countryside escape, with plenty of peaceful space, farmland all around and a tree-lined river running along one side of the camping field. But despite being tucked away in a quiet location, it’s also easily accessed from the road and has shops, pubs and places to eat conveniently close by in the local towns – both Okehampton and Hatherleigh are about 10 minutes’ drive away, or you can take a two-mile walk along an old bridleway to Hatherleigh. This is a laidback and peaceful site where dogs are welcome and there’s space to put up your awning or gazebo and get your barbecue going – perhaps with some home-grown produce bought at one of the local markets. Other facilities include a shared fridge, picnic tables, a compost toilet and a shower. Need to work up an appetite for your barbecue evening? Dartmoor National Park is about 15 minutes’ drive away for outdoor activities among the tors, or you can reach the north Cornish coast in about 45 minutes for long walks on the coast path or days of surfing.

Secluded, quiet spot with plenty of space and a top host. Great farm shop goodies & clear comms. Ideal for Dartmoor adventures, 15 mins to Okehampton. A peaceful escape, fab night skies! A few found walks from the site a bit limited.

Local attractions

You’ll no doubt stop by in Okehampton (10 minutes’ drive) at some point for a meal or some shopping, so plan to stretch out your time here with visits to its castle and the Museum of Dartmoor Life. The town is also the start point for the 11-mile Granite Way cycle trail, taking you along a mostly traffic-free path to Lydford; you can hire bikes nearby if you’ve not brought yours. Dartmoor National Park is of course filled with wonderful landscapes to explore too – the edge of the park is about 15 minutes’ drive away, and within an hour you can be visiting the Bronze Age settlement at Grimspound, wandering through Wistman's Wood or checking out the Postbridge Clapper Bridge. The National Trust sites at Dunsland and Finch Foundry (both 20 minutes) are worth checking out too. For watery pursuits, head to Roadford Lake (half an hour) for kayaking and paddleboarding or take off to the coast for beach dips and surfing in Westward Ho! (50 minutes).
