  • Small, peaceful site two miles from Okehampton
  • Coarse fishing lake and enclosed dog walking area on site
  • Shower and toilet block with underfloor heating and accessible area
Make your way to Appledore Park, two miles from Okehampton near the north Devon coast. With 4,500 recently planted trees and hedges (so far), spankingly clean facilities and so many little extra touches, ‘awesome’, ‘top notch’ and ‘knocked our socks off’ are just a few of the accolades Appledore has received from grateful guests. There are nine acres of site land at award-winning Appledore, all with sweet views of the Devon countryside and the park’s surrounding farmland, and landscaped to hold spacious pitches. Dogs are welcome, and handily, there is an enclosed dog walk through the trees or a large field to let them run in. The site's only five minutes' drive away from the A30 road to Cornwall, so it has easy access to the moors and as well as Cornwall, north Devon's beaches. If you’re arriving late, there’s a special late arrivals area with hook-up and water so you can get settled quickly (cuppa). To this smart idea, there is wifi throughout, a washing-up and veg prep area, and a room with charging points and info on the surrounding area. The amenities block has underfloor heating, private cubicles and an accessible area for disabled guests – and are so well maintained they've won a Loo of the Year award. Finally, fancy some fishing? Appledore Park has its own coarse fishing lake for guests and you can also cast off from the quay at Appledore village, take a boat out to the sea (the coast is around 30 miles from the site) or try your luck landing salmon or trout on the River Torridge.

Liked: How quiet it was, the little envelope that’s left for you in the reception area with everything you need to know, the sort of enclosed dog area with poo bin so you don’t have to walk to the main bin, acres and acres of land to walk, showers were excellent with lovely toilet cubicles which were lovely and warm. Upon arrival we couldn’t find our envelope so I called Paul in the number provided who kindly told me where it was, it was finding underneath 2 Amazon parcels that had been delivered so I hid the parcels for him and found my envelope.

Disliked: The payment system, in the envelope at the bottom where it states how to make payment, there are 3 options. To pay cash, by card or bank transfer. I opted for bank transfer as before we started doing anything I paid the money and didn’t have to wander anywhere as we arrived at 6pm and were hungry. As my partner was setting up I drove to Lidl (5mins away) for some sauce for our burgers and I got a call from my partner saying Linda had wandered over to him and asked him to pay for the pitch as they hadn’t received anything. As I arrived back to our tent I was in the middle of cooking and Linda approached us and asked us for the pitch back (I was a bit taken back as I paid over an hour ago) I did show her my online bank statement to prove payment had been made. Linda did say she would double check her end and I also said that I would head over to her in the morning before we leave to double check. We stayed the night and Linda headed over to us in the morning to say it was an error their side and my payment was received. What I didn’t like was the way we were approached and were asked to give the pitch back before even speaking with me after my return from the shop. Linda is a lovely lady and we settled the issue in the end but I would advise to go and find someone to pay directly to them to save the hassle.

From the manager: Hi, the only reason there was an issue with payment, was because you booked the same afternoon as arrival, so there was no way of us collecting payment before arriving as we would normally do so. This is the only issue we have with letting Pitchup customers book the same day as arrival (which is why alot of sites don't allow this!), but we do our very best to be flexible. I apologise that we asked for payment, but in this day and age, especially on a one night stay, if we don't, customers tend to disappear in the morning without paying! At no point however, were you asked for the pitch back - we have never, and would never do this. (There must be some confusion or misunderstanding on this matter, and Linda was most upset when reading this). I am glad that you enjoyed your stay, and hope you will come back! Many thanks, the team at Appledore Park

Liked: Absolutely brilliant stay here, Rob and Lin truly made the stay even better! So helpful, couldn't do enough for us, lovely to chat with and lots of knowledge about the area and the site itself. The site itself lots of room to explore, brilliant fishing, toilet block wow! Super clean and warm all the time, lovely clean site overall. Both my dogs enjoyed the 8 acer field along with with the wooded area so much room to exercise them! Both Rob and Lin made such a fuss of my dogs and happy to check in with my son as well. Level pitch and close to main block, well lit all round but not to bright to keep you awake, good information room along with the use of a fridge and washing machine if needed, only thing no microwave which on this occasion we would of made use of if they had one but didn't in no way ruin our stay, such a quiet relaxed and friendly site, will definitely be going back. Thanks for having us.

Local attractions

Start off at Okehampton to see the ruins of 11th-century Okehampton Castle and explore the industrial past of Dartmoor at Finch Foundry, England’s last working water-powered forge. The Museum of Dartmoor Life, an 18th-century mill with info on the moors throughout the ages and a reconstructed Bronze Age fort and Victorian kitchen, is at the town’s West Street. Nearby Castle Drogo, ‘the last to be built in England’, is now a Grade I-listed building looked after by the National Trust, with the Trust’s highest garden, rose gardens and paths snaking below into the gorge of the Teign valley. ‘Perhaps the most famous walk in Dartmoor’ (so says the NT) is the circular walk from Castle Drogo, above the Teign and along Hunters Path to cross the river. The nearest sands are Bude and Widemouth Bay about 45 minutes’ drive away.
