  • Relaxed and spacious site with views towards Dartmoor
  • Within easy reach of Torbay's beaches and Dartmoor National Park
  • Paignton Zoo, aquarium, seaside towns and more a short drive away
For a sweet-as break on a working farm, head to family-friendly Treacle Valley Campsite in the tiny village of Daccombe, between Dartmoor National Park to the west and more than 20 English Riviera beaches towards the east. This is a top spot for all ages: kids will be kept occupied at the play area or on all the wide open space around the accommodation area, and walks to the village through the surrounding countryside start right from the pitches. Treacle Valley's café/shop stocks all the basics you might need while you're on your hols, and provides a handy and free freezer block service in case you want to pack up a hamper with bubbly (possibly accompanied by a few sandwiches) and head out for the day. When you get hungry you're more than welcome to fire up the barbie or cook up something tasty over your campfire – for anything more substantial, head into one of the nearby seaside towns for supermarkets, seafood restaurants, fish and chip takeaways and posh pub grub. The nearest pub is a 20-minute walk away.

Liked: It has a relaxed atmosphere, gorgeous views and great access to the Riveria.

Disliked: The site can be very busy and attract some very unsavoury characters. A group next to our tent, bearing in mind I have two young children. Were using incredibly foul language and smoking joints every chance the bad. Couldn't wait for them to leave!

Liked: We as a family loved our stay at treacle valley, the atmosphere was great, everyone was friendly and the views were beautiful to wake up too! The access to showers and toilets were easy and was really impressed they had charging stations which always comes in handy for charging bits you need. Will definitely be back and will be recommending to everyone

Liked: We’ve been here a couple times now and love it. The owner is so nice. Love how you can get breakfast things and hot drinks in the little shop. It’s so quiet views are stunning. Not far from Torquay and newton abbot. We love it here

Bell tent

Liked: Very spacious bell tent, perfect for three of us for a weekend. Lovely views and the toilet facilities were really good, hot showers, good washing area and all kept clean.

Disliked: It would’ve been nice for the shop to be open later in the afternoon as well as just the morning.

Liked: Very nice camp site. Toilets and showers very clean, pitches are a good size. You can use the fire pit for free and wood is also sold there at a good price.

Disliked: There were cows next to my pitches and the smell was horrible. Hard to find a level pitches.

Local attractions

For stuff to do nearby, try a visit to the historic village of Cockington, three miles away, where there's a manor house and a cricket ground plus some 16th-century thatched stone cottages and a traditional pub serving cream teas. The award-winning caves of Kents Cavern – once home to prehistoric humans – are also within easy reach of Treacle Valley; this subterranean network lies close to some spectacularly scenic coastal areas with several walking routes along Torbay's UNESCO Global Geopark – one of only seven in the UK. A walk around Babbacombe coves and cliffs begins at Anstey's Cove (opposite Kents Cavern), to wind its way along a scenic track and bring you out into the pretty village of Babbacombe in Torquay; take a ride on the famed Babbacombe Cliff Railway, then follow up with a wander around four acres of award-winning gardens showcasing hundreds of model scenes and railways at Babbacombe Model Village. Take the kids on an animal adventure to explore the marine displays of Living Coasts coastal zoo and the enclosures of Paignton Zoo, both within six miles, or visit the seaside towns of Torquay, Newton Abbot, Paignton or Totnes for miniature golf, arcades, ice cream shops and beaches.
