Custard the horse box

  • Relaxed and spacious site with views towards Dartmoor
  • Within easy reach of Torbay's beaches and Dartmoor National Park
  • Paignton Zoo, aquarium, seaside towns and more a short drive away
For a sweet-as break on a working farm, head to family-friendly Treacle Valley Campsite in the tiny village of Daccombe, between Dartmoor National Park to the west and more than 20 English Riviera beaches towards the east. This is a top spot for all ages: kids will be kept occupied at the play area or on all the wide open space around the accommodation area, and walks to the village through the surrounding countryside start right from the pitches. Treacle Valley's café/shop stocks all the basics you might need while you're on your hols, and provides a handy and free freezer block service in case you want to pack up a hamper with bubbly (possibly accompanied by a few sandwiches) and head out for the day. When you get hungry you're more than welcome to fire up the barbie or cook up something tasty over your campfire – for anything more substantial, head into one of the nearby seaside towns for supermarkets, seafood restaurants, fish and chip takeaways and posh pub grub. The nearest pub is a 20-minute walk away.

What customers say

This family-friendly campsite offers awesome country views & a chilled vibe. Guests love the friendly staff, tidy facilities & pitch choice. Fire pits are a popular extra. While many rave about the beautiful spot & good value, some note uneven ground, camper noise & a steep access road. Most want to come back!

Unpowered grass tent site (medium)

Liked Great stay for the weekend, would come again! Nice welcome when arrived.
Facilities were great toilet/showers clean and are cleaned regularly and the shower was refreshing in the morning.

Free fire pits to use which is very useful and can buy wood on the site for £5.
The views were great especially in the morning when there’s a sun rise.

Not far from the towns and plenty of local shops near.
Loved that this site is an arrive and leave at any time as it was nice not to rush around.

Almost got the pop corn out on the first night as other campers were arguing which resulted in two police cars turning up and making an arrest.

Disliked There’s a strong smell from the cows in the air from the hut next to us you do get use to it after a bit.

Custard the Horse Box microlodge

Liked Horse box was nicely converted, good to have a good sized fridge. Handy for lots of beaches. Logs and firepit included. Pretty sunsets.

Disliked A group of families played exceptionally loud music until 1am, then began fighting resulting in two Police cars and an arrest. The whole campsite was kept up/ woken up. As groups are welcomed and can pitch anywhere the site seems to attract people who don't care for others. Rules not enforced until the Police were called. Other idiots pitched their tents literally centimetres from the horse box, on the parking space as the field was quite hilly, despite the field being empty with flat spaces available.

Unpowered grass tent site (small)

Liked Absolutely fabulous location, just over the hill to Torquay, easily accessible to many places with a car.

Beautiful campsite and you can rock up and pitch anywhere. We loved choosing the perfect pitch to put our yurt.

The use of the fire pits for free was wonderful and we cooked fresh scallops, lobster and jacket potatoes on ours - as well as a night toasting marshmallows.

Treacle valley campsite offers perfect, back to nature camping, where you can sit under the stars with friends or watch the sunset - absolutely stunning sunsets if you time it right.

We will definitely be back.

Local attractions

For stuff to do nearby, try a visit to the historic village of Cockington, three miles away, where there's a manor house and a cricket ground plus some 16th-century thatched stone cottages and a traditional pub serving cream teas. The award-winning caves of Kents Cavern – once home to prehistoric humans – are also within easy reach of Treacle Valley; this subterranean network lies close to some spectacularly scenic coastal areas with several walking routes along Torbay's UNESCO Global Geopark – one of only seven in the UK. A walk around Babbacombe coves and cliffs begins at Anstey's Cove (opposite Kents Cavern), to wind its way along a scenic track and bring you out into the pretty village of Babbacombe in Torquay; take a ride on the famed Babbacombe Cliff Railway, then follow up with a wander around four acres of award-winning gardens showcasing hundreds of model scenes and railways at Babbacombe Model Village. Take the kids on an animal adventure at Paignton Zoo (20 minutes) or visit the seaside towns of Torquay (15 minutes), Paignton (20 minutes), Brixham (half an hour), Shaldon (15 minutes) or Teignmouth (20 minutes) for miniature golf, arcades, ice cream shops and beaches.
