  • Secluded site among 80 acres of meadow in the South Hams area
  • Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Bigbury-on-Sea within 15 minutes' drive
  • On the River Avon estuary for launching paddleboards and kayaks
With 80 acres of meadow and pasture on site, a south-facing aspect and a scenic setting in Devon’s South Hams National Landscape, you can certainly expect a gorgeous and peaceful location at Pond and Pasture Glamping and Camping. But what really makes this place stand out is one particularly special feature: the setting right next to the River Avon estuary. And that means a couple of wonderful things for guests – firstly, the stunning views over the water to the South Efford Marsh Devon Wildlife Trust site opposite, and secondly the chance to launch your kayaks or paddleboards directly from the site when the tide is right. Speaking of the tide, that adds extra intrigue to this place, as it’s only reachable via a tidal road that floods for a couple of hours twice a day around high tide. That means you’ll need to time your travels to and from the site well (don’t worry, you’ll be sent a tide chart to help you) and a fabulous feeling of seclusion while you’re cut off from the outside world. Part of a working farm, this site is intentionally small, quiet and laidback – there’s no music allowed, and no noisy groups, although you will hear a bit of chat from resident peacocks Dashi and Blue. For a bit more company, the nature reserve is walkable from the site and home to herons, kingfishers and otters. Simple facilities on site include compost toilets, showers, a washing-up area and picnic tables. Barbecues and campfires are permitted, with supplies available at the shops 10 minutes’ drive away in Kingsbridge.

Route directions

Using the postcode in a satnav will get you close. Look for the sign at the bottom of the lane. Note that the road into the farm crosses a tidal section of the Avon Estuary which floods around high water — you'll be sent tide times with your booking so you can time your arrival. Never drive through the water; if the road is covered, wait in the village and it will clear within the hour.

Local attractions

The estuary is the main draw here – at certain times you can take a wild swim or launch kayaks/paddleboards to ride the ebb to Bantham beach (and then wait for the flood that will carry you all the way back). Bantham beach (15 minutes’ drive) is also one of Devon’s favourite surf spots – and just one of the lovely beaches nearby. You may also like to head to sweet little Hope Cove (20 minutes) and quiet Wonwell (15 minutes) or make a day of it at Bigbury-on-Sea (15 minutes), riding the sea tractor out to Burgh Island, a favourite haunt of Agatha Christie. Salcombe (15 minutes) is another fabulous spot – and of course there are spectacular walks along the South West Coast Path all around. The coast often hogs the glory around here – but don’t ignore the inland attractions. In particular, Dartmoor National Park (around half an hour away) is a wonderful place to walk, and Dartmoor Zoo a popular trip for families. On damp days, Plymouth (40 minutes) comes up trumps with the National Marine Aquarium and The Box museum.
