  • Wild camping field with views of South Devon woodland near Kingsbridge
  • A 40-minute drive to Plymouth; 20 minutes to Dartmoor National Park
  • Pubs and a farm shop nearby, close to beaches and walks
A remote camping field surrounded by woods in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Hazelwood View should hit the spot with anyone looking for a relaxing mini-break deep in the countryside. And you’ll soon make new friends with the sheep grazing around you (but please don’t fuss or feed them). Quiet and secluded this camping field may be, but never fear – there’s masses to do round and about. First off, you’re a five-minute drive from a couple of great foodie pubs if you don’t want to cook, and secondly, there’s a farm shop about the same distance away for picking up bits and bobs to grill on the barbecue by your tent. If you’re looking to explore on foot, the start of the Blackdown Rings walk is a five-minute drive away, and it’s only 20 minutes to the edge of Dartmoor National Park, where hiking routes lead across open moorland to stone circles and ancient tombs. Pack everybody into the car and you’ll soon be on the beach at Blackpool Sands (20 minutes), while Slapton Ley (25 minutes) is a long shingle spit with a lake on one side and the sea on the other. Dogs are welcome on your holiday too, but please note, they must be kept in a lead at all times. Failure to control them can result in a fine.

Local attractions

Plymouth (40 minutes’ drive) is a great place to take the kids, with just enough history to keep them interested in the Mayflower Heritage Trail. Once they've done their history homework, you can reward them with seahorses and turtles in tanks at the National Marine Aquarium (35 minutes), or snake encounters at Dartmoor Zoo (30 minutes). The thrill rides and petting zoo at Woodlands Family Theme Park (15 minutes) are another popular hit with youngsters, and there are miniature pigs and donkeys to cuddle at Pennywell Farm (20 minutes). For a really special encounter, book yourself in for a hands-on falconry experience at Dartmoor Hawking (five minutes' walk), where you can meet barn owls and bald eagles (advance booking essential). Sporty families with older kids can take surfing lessons in Bigbury-on-Sea, or hire dinghies and potter along the Dart river (both 25 minutes). Kingsbridge (15 minutes) is the pick-up point for long-distance hikes along the South West Coast Path, and it’s also fab for a nose around its cluster of antique shops before you retire to a waterfront pub serving fresh seafood, for leisurely lunches with sea views.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Small, quiet campsite with a only a small amount of pitches which still allowed us plenty of space. Only 4 others campers so was lovely and quiet.
Only 20 min drive to various beaches too which was nice.
We had a wooden bench table to use on site and a fire pit which was great. Would recommend taking your own fire wood as there wasn't a great deal to find onsite. We managed to get some at the beach though.
Toilet facilities were clean and tidy with lovely little touches like sanitary products which was great imo.
Shower basic but hot water and clean surroundings.
Decent size sink for washing up facilities.
Didn't see any owners or anything like it stated they would pop and visit but that didn't bother us. We came and went as we pleased.

Disliked: When we arrived there was quiet a bit of dog poo on the field which wasn't great with our 1 Yr old toddling around and 3 other children playing. Picked up what we could but annoying on behalf of other lazy campers.
Sat nav doesn't take you to the site but if you keep driving down the hill you do find it fairly easily.
The campsite is on a hill although because quiet we were still able to find a flat spot and set up a decent pitch.

From the manager: Hi Charlotte,
Sorry to have missed you throughout your stay, we are on-site everyday cleaning the site. We don’t like to disturb our guests as they come to relax in the surroundings.
There is plenty of firewood on-site already cut and split beside the toilet block for anyone to use and there is a large amount in the woods if people wish to collect their own which is half the fun.
We welcome dogs to our site and expect owners to be responsible we inspect daily when cleaning and sadly this must of happened in between visits.
In our rural setting postcodes cover a large area hence why we always send a welcome message recommending what three words.
Glad you enjoyed your stay it is a beautiful relaxing spot that many enjoy.
Best wishes
Pat
