  • Off-grid pitches right by the beach on the South Devon Heritage Coast
  • Five minutes' walk to South Milton Sands; 10 mins' drive to Salcombe
  • Honesty shop and simple kitchen facilities on site; dogs welcome
Well, this is a cool location indeed… Cool Cow Camping is part of a traditional farm in the stunning South Hams, with views out to sea and the lovely beach of South Milton Sands about five minutes’ walk away. Cows get a mention in the site’s name as they’ll be your nearest neighbours, living in the next-door field. As for your own field, it’s got spacious off-grid pitches with access to simple (and eco-friendly) facilities including compost toilets, gas-heated showers and a communal kitchen with a food prep area, fridge/freezer access and washing-up sinks (you’ll need to bring your own cooking kit, however). There’s also a spring water supply that guests can use (but please note that it’s untested and therefore not proven to be safe for drinking; bottled water is likely to be a safer bet). Picnics, takeaways and other alfresco meals on site come with sea views as standard, and you can pick up certain supplies for these from the site’s honesty shop (think locally sourced meat, bread, dairy and other essentials). You may also like to explore some of the area’s other options for local food and drinks – perhaps ambling along the coast path to the neighbouring villages of Hope Cove and Thurlestone for pubs, cafés and village shops or setting out for the longer walk to Bolberry or Bantham for more dining options. For days out, activities and yet more places to eat, you might like to try Kingsbridge and Salcombe (both about 10 minutes’ drive) or seek out city attractions in Plymouth (45 minutes).

What customers say

A peaceful spot, a stroll from beaches & coastal paths. Reviewers loved the spacious pitches, great views & honesty shop. Facilities mostly clean, hot showers available. Narrow lanes, occasional toilet smell & basic washing-up were noted, but the vibe & nature won out. Many want to come back.

Unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked The location was perfect, only 10 min walk to the beach, and 30 or so mins walk to hope cove, the honesty shop had enough varied items that might be needed, the showers were clean.

Disliked The wash up area where the showers and toilets are could do with having a bit more space and maybe an extra tap and sink, felt a bit uneasy about no lock on the showers, the compost toilets looked and smelled clean and fresh the first day but the next they started to get a bit strong with smells and pretty full, found difficult to continue to use.

Unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Perfect location five minutes from the beach, and a perfect distance from hope cove fairly easy walk along the coast path

Disliked Toilets and showers could do with the gaps in the doors being filled and maybe something to soften the slamming doors as very load at night obviously if people were a little more careful if wouldn’t be a problem and locks on the showers as to avoid an unwanted eyeful lol 🫣

Liked Close to the beach ⛱️
Directions to the camp 🏕 we're helpful.

Disliked Few facilities very basic.
No locks on 3 showers that are available. 1 sink and no lights by the facilities. Few solar lights would be helpful.

Unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Good position for beaches and coastal walks.

Disliked Unfortunately we were next to a large family gathering who took up at least 4 pitches with many vehicles, one of which parked right alongside our van and proceeded to blow up numerous airbeds with car engine running and loud music playing. Kept awake by loud voices until well after 12am.

Local attractions

First stop from here should surely be South Milton Sands – it’ll take you only five minutes or so to stroll down there to relax on the golden sands or poke around in the rockpools. There’s a watersports centre down there too, so you can hire paddleboards and kayaks or have someone give you lessons in how to use them. Elsewhere along the coast there are of course some excellent walks to be had on the South West Coast Path, and it’s worth planning visits to Bigbury-on-Sea (25 minutes’ drive) for a visit to Burgh Island and Salcombe (10 minutes) for a gin tasting and a tour of Overbeck’s Garden. Nearby Thurlestone (15 minutes' drive/half an hour's coastal walk) has a golf course and a lovely spa too. Away from the coast, you may like to take the kids to Pennywell Farm (25 minutes) for activities like lamb feeding and goat milking, or to spy more exotic beasts at Dartmoor Zoo (40 minutes). Meanwhile, Plymouth (45 minutes) has attractions like the National Marine Aquarium and The Box interactive museum.
