  • Small family-run holiday park on the edge of Great Torrington
  • Easy access to walks and Tarka Trail bike rides; coast 20 mins' drive
  • Outdoor pool, short tennis court and games room on site
Can’t quite decide where to have your next holiday? How about heading to the place that’s been identified as ‘the healthiest place to live in Britain’? According to a study from the University of Liverpool, that honour goes to the north Devon town of Great Torrington, between the Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks and about 10 miles from the coast. Just on the edge of town is Greenways Valley Holiday Park, a small, family-run park that prides itself on its friendly and personal service as well as having a fabulous location. There’s a real rural vibe on site, with views over the surrounding farmland, lots of visiting wildlife and access to 20 miles or so of public footpaths directly from the site. Even with all this around you, it's still only a 15-minute walk to the centre of town for a good clutch of shops, pubs and restaurants. That means it should be nice and easy to get out for a drink or meal, or to hit the Pannier Market or supermarkets to pick up whatever bits you need for a meal cooked in your kitchen or at the shared barbecue area. Facilities-wise, a play area, games room and short tennis court should keep the kids amused for a while, and there’s a heated outdoor pool that’s open from June to September for swims, splashing about and (hopefully) sunbathing days. And of course, there's plenty to fill your days with nearby too – Greenways Valley is in a great position for cycling the Tarka Trail, visiting the RHS Garden Rosemoor or hitting the beach in Westward Ho! Easy access to the main roads also means that journeys further into Devon or Cornwall should be straightforward too.

Local attractions

You won't have to go far to find entertainment around here – it’s only a five-minute drive to glass blowing at Dartington Crystal or a stroll through the pretty pathways of RHS Rosemoor Garden. The Tarka Trail passes through Great Torrington too, for traffic-free bike rides all the way up to the coast. Speaking of the coast, there are some lovely spots close by, including Westward Ho! beach (25 minutes’ drive), the cute cobbled village of Clovelly (35 minutes) and surf hotspot Bude (45 minutes). Also close to the coast are the Milky Way Adventure Park and North Devon Wake Park (both half an hour). If you’ve got kids to keep amused, a visit to the Big Sheep (20 minutes) should definitely be on the cards to see sheep racing and meet the animals. For more grownup tastes, try the likes of Quince Honey Farm (half an hour), Hartland Abbey (40 minutes) and Arlington Court (45 minutes).
