Why choose between comfort and outdoor adventure when you can have them both at Feather Down Farm – Fountain Violet? With views over the River Dart and set on 130 acres of grassland, this dog-friendly glampsite is five minutes’ drive from the coastal village of Kingswear in south Devon countryside. With masses of room for family or friends, accommodation is in luxurious and spacious canvas safari tents. At this juncture, please note there is no electricity or wifi; light is supplied by candles and oil lamps, while a woodburning stove does double duty as a heater and cooker. Inside each tent is a comfy sofa to sink into at the end of a fun-filled day, a dining area, lots of storage and a kitchen decked out with most things you need to produce meals. Sleeping up to six, there is a mixture of double beds, cupboard beds and bunks, all with proper mattresses and snuggly duvets. A private flushing loo and hot shower come as part of the deal too. Little bonuses include a pizza oven, which gets fired up regularly, and an honesty shop for when you run out of supplies or just fancy sampling some tasty Devon produce. Your hosts are the Jones family, who specialise in rearing beef and producing organic eggs. Ask for a farm tour at any time; Edward will be pleased to show you around and answer questions. Parking is away from the pitches, and there are wheelbarrows to help you get your gear to the tents.

Local attractions

This part of Devon is beach and watersports central. If you fancy a lazy day or picnic on the sand, Mill Bay (half an hour’s walk) has a tiny cove that’s often almost deserted. To up the activity levels somewhat, you can kayak, paddleboard, surf and sail on the River Dart (five minutes’ drive), or treat the kids to rockpooling at shingle Man Sands (15 minutes). See the coastline with rambles along sections of the South West Coast Path (half an hour’s walk), or take the weight off your feet with a trip around the Dart Estuary on the Dartmouth Steam Railway (five minutes’ drive). For a maritime perspective on your surroundings, take a leisurely river cruise from Dartmouth (25 minutes) to Totnes (half an hour). For a slice of history, head over to National Trust-owned Greenway (15 minutes), the 1950s summer residence of author Agatha Christie, for tours of luxurious rooms and leafy gardens. And talking of well-known people, another NT property nearby is the sprawling arts and crafts-style mansion at Coleton Fishacre, once home to theatre impresario Rupert D’Oyly Carte.
