  • Quiet pop-up Exmoor site 10 minutes’ drive from the north Devon coast
  • A 10-minute drive from Combe Martin; half an hour to Saunton Sands
  • Moorland views and great stargazing on site; surfing beaches nearby
Being up on a hill means that the pitches at Middle Dean Campsite have exceptional views over Exmoor National Park, with home-reared lambs grazing the field in spring to up the rural outlook. And that location has more going for it too: this is a place that's minutes away from great moorland walks (well-behaved dogs welcome) as well as Devon surfing beaches, golf courses and theme parks. Handy supermarkets for picking up supplies are a 10-minute drive away at Combe Martin, where you can also hire kayaks and paddleboards at the beach. The popular surfing spots of Woolacombe, Croyde or Saunton are all less than half an hour away, and you could try pony trekking across the moors or playing a round of golf on seaside links courses. Back at base, you’ll see some spectacular sunsets on clear evenings. Thanks to the lack of light pollution in the area, the national park is now a Dark Sky Reserve, and on clear nights you might get to see the Milky Way. Barbecues are allowed (bring your own equipment and food) but if you don’t fancy cooking of an evening, there are some great local pubs nearby too. Amenities on site include showers, composting loos and a washing-up area.

Local attractions

Most guests stay here for the bracing moorland air or water-based activities. You can explore Exmoor on foot, horseback or quad bike, and follow the coastline at Combe Martin (10 minutes’ drive) on paddleboards. Surfers may prefer to head to the west-coast beaches for their consistent rollers. Kids can take mini-train rides to spot seals, wolves and model dinosaurs at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, and daily animal walks are held at Exmoor Zoo (both around 10 minutes). They’ll also love travelling on the steep, Victorian-era Cliff Railway connecting Lynmouth and Linton (20 minutes). You won’t go short of cultural adventures either. There are historic coaches in the National Trust Carriage Museum at Arlington Court, and you’ll find loads to see and do in the dungeons and 19th-century rooms at Watermouth Castle (both less than 15 minutes).
