  • Simple family campsite near Colyton in East Devon National Landscape
  • The Donkey Sanctuary 10 minutes’ drive; Jurassic Coast 15 minutes
  • Wiscombe Park car-racing days next door; pub and shop 10 minutes’
Back to basics it might be, but pop-up Blackbury Campsite is in one cracking location, with East Devon National Landscape views in all directions from the grass pitches, and close to all manner of fun things to do with the family – and the family dog too. Jurassic Coast beaches or The Donkey Sanctuary, anyone? They are both within 15 minutes’ drive. Only open for the school summer holidays – a playground for younger guests awaits – the level camping field has compost loos, a hot shower and an undercover washing-up area. All the facility units were built locally using equally local Devon larch. The site faces south, so everyone gets the sunshine and can enjoy the far-reaching views over valleys and oak woodland. It’s super-easy to get to, and tucked away down a quiet lane on a gorgeous 200-acre farm dating right back to Saxon times. Throughout summer, the next-door neighbours (right opposite the campsite entrance) host Wiscombe Park motor-racing days, and there’s a lively roster of music festivals in Sidmouth. Need anything else? There are pubs and shops in Colyton (both 15 minutes’ drive).

What customers say

Peaceful, spacious site with great country views, close to coast. Clean, eco-friendly facilities (compost loos, hot showers), campfires allowed. Mostly quiet, but occasional early delivery noise. Some want more showers in peak times. Owners friendly & helpful. Great for a "back to basics" natural escape.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Simplistic, quiet, plenty of space. Beautiful surroundings.
Last minute booking (less than 24hrs) great communication Via email from the owner.
Ideal for a short getaway

Disliked Facilities were ok as there were only approx 12 ‘parties’ but should it be busier, the 3 toilets and 1 shower would be very busy. Also not ideal having to wash hands from using the toilet to where dishes get washed.

Because of its relaxed nature, large groups do camp here.

Local attractions

When your break is all about getting back to nature, you can stroll across the fields to the Iron Age fort at Blackbury Camp (five minutes’ walk), and everybody can stretch their legs (or paws) on a ramble around Bovey Down Woods (half an hour), where you can often spot deer among the trees. For a stroll with a difference, exercise an alpaca out on the trails at Bearhouse Alpacas (10 minutes’ drive). Continuing with the animal theme, most kids adore petting the donkeys at The Donkey Sanctuary (also 10 minutes), or there are endangered wolves, bears and red squirrels to view at Wildwood Devon animal park (20 minutes). Younger kids will enjoy the mini-train rides at Pecorama (15 minutes) as well as the waterslides, gentle rollercoasters and go-kart track at Crealy Theme Park and Resort (25 minutes). Maybe you’d all rather laze on a Jurassic Coast beach? The closest are at Branscombe, a shingle stretch with access to the South West Coast Path, and Beer (both 15 minutes), where fishermen will take you out in their boats to catch mackerel or you can try out various watersports.
