  • Family-friendly north Devon site on the outskirts of Braunton village
  • A five-minute drive from Saunton Sands, the nearest beach
  • Views over Taw estuary; several surf beaches and surf schools nearby
This is prime surfing territory on the outskirts of Braunton in north Devon. Braunton Sands Campsite is a flat, family-friendly campsite with good facilities (a toilet block and shower block with hot and cold water) surrounded by open farmland, with fab views to the Taw river estuary and – this is the best news – five minutes’ drive from Saunton Sands surfing beach. In fact, there's a massive choice of really popular surfing destinations hereabouts. Woolacombe and Croyde Bay are both top spots, while Lynmouth has more tricky swells (definitely one for the experts). And if you haven’t come equipped to get out on the water, surf boards and wetsuits are available for hire at all the beaches, and there are plenty of surfing schools for novice wave riders looking to up their game. If you’re simply not into surfing, don’t worry – there’s still plenty to do. The South West Coast Path follows the coastline, and cyclists (there’s a bike hire place a five-minute walk away) and walkers can access the Tarka Trail in Braunton village, to explore spectacular north Devon countryside. Golfing enthusiasts have a choice of the seaside links at Westward Ho! or two championship courses near Saunton. Braunton itself is a buzzy little village with shops, bars and several cafés where you can refuel over breakfast after catching some early waves – it's about a five-minute walk from the site to the village centre. There’s also a handy supermarket, but for major shopping expeditions, head to the market town of Barnstaple (15 minutes’ drive), where you can also pick up takeaways. There's also a bus stop a short distance from the site, where guests can catch an open-topped bus to beaches.

Liked Alan, the site owner was friendly & helpful. Toilets & showers were clean. A lovely location, walking distance to supermarket, town & countryside. Short drive to many beaches & towns. No noise from traffic on site which is rare. Spacious pitches which are all level.

Disliked The site was long & narrow, if full there would have been no space for the children to play apart from an area at the end of the campsite. We were also concerned that when full the two toilets & three showers would not be sufficient (there was a portaloo at the opposite end of site).
As it happened not all the pitches were taken so queuing for the loo only happened a couple of times.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments and pleased you enjoyed your stay. Hopefully see you again one day.

Liked What a fantastic little campsite! Initially, we had whittled it down to 2 choices, we went with this one and were not disappointed.

It's a small campsite which is good. It has lovely hot showers and a small toilet block (with hand basins and soap), also a very small library underneath the table. A kitchen sink so you can wash up and a table top freezer. It also has a little area with goals for football.

Alan came around every morning and is as friendly as everyone states he is, asks about your plans and what you did the day before, he's a lovely man.

Literally right next door to the cricket club, you can watch most of it from your tent! Drinks there are very reasonably priced.

The village is lovely and a short walk away, topless buses into Croyd which is a beautiful town. Lots of walks on the doorstep.

I would definitely recommend this site and will come back again.

From the manager: Thank you so much for those wonderful comments - makes it all worth while. So very pleased you enjoyed your stay.

Local attractions

Away from north Devon’s surfing beaches, Lynmouth (40 minutes’ drive) is packed with cutesy fishing cottages and arty boutiques, and connected by a steep cliffside funicular railway to its smaller twin, Lynton. It’s also well worth checking out harbourside Appledore (35 minutes), known for its ship-building traditions and the North Devon Maritime Museum (a great rainy day option). You’re well placed for day trips around the rocky crags and moorland of Exmoor National Park (30 minutes), or pottering around the narrow streets of pretty, seafront Clovelly (45 minutes). Ilfracombe (15 minutes) is the departure point for boat cruises to spot puffins and seals on Lundy Island, and for big nights out, try out the cosy pubs and indie restaurants in Barnstaple (15 minutes) for size. Travelling with younger kids? Take them to meet farm animals at The Big Sheep (30 minutes), see the model dinos and feed sea lions at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park (25 minutes), or let them safely run off energy on Saunton Sands (five minutes).
