  • Quiet pop-up site with countryside views four miles from Port Isaac
  • A 20-minute drive from Polzeath beach; half an hour to Tintagel Castle
  • Eggs and horse and carriage rides available; pub a short walk away
From fishing trips and catching swells to taking to the Cornish lanes on a horse and carriage, you’ll be well-based to sink your teeth into North Cornwall from Shepherds View. There sure are many flavours to be sampled, from surfing, kayaking and paddleboarding around the coast (under 20 minutes’ drive) to cycling the Camel Trail (10 minutes’ drive) or meandering around Bodmin Moor (35 minutes). Of course, there’s the actual food too. This small site is part of a working farm with sheep, cattle and horses in the neighbouring fields and the site’s hens produce fresh eggs available to buy on site. For more fresh goodies, farm shops are 10 minutes’ drive away, and mealtime-ready, the site’s local (15 minutes’ walk) has a beer garden and tasty bits to eat. St Kew’s the name of the local village, but Wadebridge (10 minutes’ drive) is the bigger place to hand, with supermarkets, takeaways and food shops abound. Wildlife such as fox, deer and buzzards are a likelier sight on site, where the light pollution makes for some special starry nights. You’ll need your torch to get about at night, as the site is a friendly pop-up specialising in countryside views and sunsets, rather than anything over the top. You’ll have access to flushing toilets and water but no showers. Handily, there are bricks available to prop up a disposable barbecue. And those of you who’d like to take a tour of the Cornish lanes in old-fashioned style can book a horse and carriage ride in advance.

Local attractions

To the coast or the moors? Those of you who want to start with the seaside will have quite the platter before you. Whether it’s a fishing trip from Port Isaac (10 minutes’ drive), surfing followed by a beach café pitstop at Polzeath beach (20 minutes) or a leisurely paddle at the family-friendly Daymer Bay (25 minutes), there are many ways to take to the water. Angling, windsurfing, canoeing, rowing and sailing are all the craze from Rock (20 minutes), while in Boscastle (25 minutes), the harbour’s the go-to for trips to see razorbills, seals and puffins or wreck fishing. There's a nice dose of history around the coast too, beginning in Boscastle’s witchcraft museum or the mystery-wrapped Tintagel Castle and Merlin’s Cave (half an hour). Coastal walks are in no short supply around these places but inland, on Bodmin Moor (35 minutes), a walk to the top of Rough Tor (half an hour) will sort you with 360-degree moorland views. Those of you who'd like to get some cycling in will also be happy to find many hire centres around, especially for the 18-mile Camel Trail from Wadebridge (10 minutes) to Padstow or Bodmin.
