Liked: Paul runs a great campsite. He is friendly and obliging and ready with local information. Facilities were spotlessly clean. Keen attention to what campers need such as hooks for hanging clothes and hot water. Walk-ins are well catered for too. Everyone has a sea view due to the level pitches being in a long line. Really enjoyed our stay there and would recommend it to anyone who likes a quiet campsite out in the countryside.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Liked: Beautiful setting overlooking the coast towards Looe. All pitches level and well maintained. Facilities basic but adequate and well maintained. 15 minute walk down to Downderry where we discovered a pub doing amazingly food! Bit of a climb back to site but not an issue if you’re fit! Would recommend a stay.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Beautiful views. Loads of space. The pitches are all in one row along the top of the field, with views in both directions over the sea. Space has been deliberately left between the pitches which is very thoughtful. The ground was level at the top of the field and good for camping and driving to the pitch, and didn't get muddy despite some heavy rain. The grass was short so it was easy to play on. The facilities are clean, and the showers were warm. It was nice to have a fridge and freezer in the communal area

Disliked: The campsite is on the top of a hill, which gives it the great views. It's a bit of a walk down a steep hill to the coast though, if that would be an issue for anyone. There are no hedges so there wasn't much shelter from the wind. Again this was not an issue for us but you might want to take a windbreak if there's wind forecast, so you can sit outside and enjoy the views

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: A very peaceful, quiet site. Facilities to charge phones for a couple of pounds. Smart system for choosing pitches so if you were in a van you could go out for the day and keep your pitch even though it was empty. All pitches with sea view. Both showers were spacious, clean and hot. Would suit coast path walkers too. Friendly owner with good information about the local area

Local attractions

Things might seem easygoing so far, but there’s just the place nearby to raise the stakes. Adrenalin Quarry (15 minutes’ drive) lives up to its name, thanks to its aqua park, go-karting circuit and 490-metre zipwire (that’s if you have the courage to take the leap from the 50-metre cliff). Segways are the sport of choice at Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park (half an hour). This historic park by the sea has more than just coastal views: it’s also an estate with activities from survival courses to archery, watersports and circus skills (stilts, anyone?). For the animal world, some fur (or feather) therapy takes place at Porfell Wildlife Park & Sanctuary (half an hour). There’s the opportunity to be a keeper for a day both here and at Wild Futures (15 minutes), a local monkey sanctuary. Rainforest biomes are the territory for a whole load of tropical plants and that’s the tune at Eden Project (45 minutes). Polperro (half an hour) is along the coast in the same direction, so perhaps you’ll want to pair your trip there with a visit to the large fishing village, where walks, beaches and fishing trips are rife.
