  • Family-friendly farm site on the scenic Roseland peninsula
  • Less than five minutes’ drive from spectacular sandy beaches
  • Rambler’s paradise: South West Coast Path within 20 minutes’ walk
Pack your swimming cossie, pull on those walking boots and read up on the right way to eat a cream tea – you’re bound for a stay at Trewince Farm Touring, a family-friendly site on a working farm under five minutes’ drive from the Cornish coastal village of Portscatho. If it’s a seaside getaway you’re after, you’ve come to the right place: you can be collecting seashells on the kid-friendly Towan beach in less than five minutes, and sandy stretches at Pendower and Carne are within 20 minutes of base. All three are also on the South West Coast Path, so you can expect splendid coastline views as well as swimming, sandcastles and wanders. For anyone whose interest was piqued by that mention of the South West Coast Path, it’s far from this area’s only hiking option: the Roseland peninsula is part of the Cornish Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so there are plenty of spectacularly scenic strolls through fishing villages, coves and harbours. When it’s time for food, wend your way to the pubs, cafés and restaurants of Portscatho, Gerrans and St Mawes, and stock up on essential supplies at the St Mawes supermarket. If nothing around here strikes your fancy, there are plenty more options in Truro, half an hour away.

Local attractions

Is your fave part of a beachside getaway getting active on the water? You’re in luck round here: have a go at standup paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing and powerboating at Loe Beach Watersports, 45 minutes’ drive away, or take to the high seas on an orca sea safari out of Falmouth (an hour away), keeping a weather eye out for dolphins, seals, basking sharks and whales. For wannabe sailors who prefer to stay on dry land (people are enigmas), a stop at Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre comes highly recommended – if nothing else, it’ll convince you you’re right not to get out on the water – and a quick(ish) jaunt to Falmouth for the National Maritime Museum is a must. Stick around Falmouth for Pendennis Castle, a 16th-century stronghold built by history’s (arguably) most famous king, Henry VIII, then learn more about Cornish history at Trerice, East Pool Mine and Truro’s Tregothnan (home to the first English-grown tea). If you want a city day or two, Truro is a top spot, with museums, flea markets and even a couple of breweries, but if nature days are more your speed, make haste to the Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan botanical garden, Glendurgan and Trelissick (all within an hour) for peaceful outdoorsy turns.
