  • Standalone shepherd’s hut in the apple orchard of a Cornish farm
  • Cotehele five minutes’ drive and Buckland Abbey half an hour
  • Open-plan living space with a kitchen and double bed; private garden
Looking to escape the rat race? You can certainly do that at Bohetherick Farm Wild Camping, a small family-run site on a 200-acre National Trust beef farm in the scenic Tamar Valley National Landscape – you’ll escape the holiday crowds in this quiet corner of Cornwall. Just 20 minutes’ drive from Saltash, accommodation is in a nifty shepherd’s hut set in the farm’s apple orchard, with views towards the Tamar-Tavy Estuary. The shepherd’s hut is spot-on for couples; it has a double bed with storage underneath, an open-plan living space with eating and chilling areas, and a compact kitchen with all the essentials. The hut also has sole use of a bathroom (housed in a stone shed) with a toilet, sink and electric shower. Moving outside, there is a small private garden with tables and chairs for alfresco dining, and of course, more of those glorious estuary views. When you’re hungry, fire up the barbecue or roast a few small snacks over the firepit provided. You can buy foodie essentials in the supermarkets of Saltash, but if you’ve swerved cooking while on your Tamar Valley break, simply head off to one of the several pubs within half an hour’s walking distance.

Local attractions

If you’re keen to get outdoors and active, Tamar Trails Centre (20 minutes’ drive) has hiking and biking trails through woodland, zipwires and treetop rope courses. You can also go paddleboarding and kayaking on the still waters above Lopwell Dam (35 minutes) or have a stroll down the banks of the River Tavy. If you’re scheduling a bit of cultural sightseeing into your Cornish holiday, two National Trust sites are nearby. Cotehele (five minutes) is a handsome Tudor mansion with a mill on the River Tamar quayside, or you can tour the formal gardens and ornate suites of rooms at mighty Buckland Abbey (half an hour), once the stately residence of Elizabethan adventurer Sir Francis Drake. Doubtless animal lovers may prefer a visit to Tamar Valley Donkey Park (10 minutes), where they can feed the goats and Shetland ponies, groom the donkeys (or adopt one if you’re feeling flush) and nab an ice cream in the café.
