  • Family-run farm site a couple of minutes off the A30 main road
  • Five mins’ drive to the coast at Marazion and 10 to St Michael’s Mount
  • Eco-friendly site; Park & Ride for St Ives within 30 minutes' walk
For the freedom of lots of space and a laidback atmosphere, settle in on the four-acre field at family-run Arch Lane Camping on your next trip. As well as having another recreational patch of land away from the pitches for everything from football to frisbee games, this site in west Cornwall has a couple of extra quirks: think showers set up in repurposed horseboxes and eco-friendly toilets… The location’s as nifty as the setup – pretty much in the middle of the county, a couple of minutes’ drive from the A30 (the main trunk road around here), so it's easy to reach cracking Cornish attractions like the stunning town of St Ives (20 minutes’ drive). Prefer not to bother with finding a place to put the car in this busy seaside settlement? The public transport option at the Park & Ride site at Hayle (just under a half an hour's walk away) makes days out even easier. Other local landmarks, like St Michael's Mount (10 minutes east), are a cinch to reach through quiet country lanes, and if you'd rather ramble, footpaths lead right from the site to the nearby village of St Erth (35 minutes’ walk) with its shop, post office and local pub. For those who fancy fishing, stocked ponds are here as well – fingers crossed for landing a few fine specimens to throw on the barbecue back on site… If you're especially peckish, feel free to bring along a firepit or barbecue (only ones raised off the ground, ta) to cook up a decent alfresco meal. You might hear the rush of the train to Penzance going past as Arch Lane Camping’s by a railway line, but these are infrequent and don’t tend to cause a disturbance.

Local attractions

Looking to get out on the water? Paddleboard and kayak hire are available in Marazion just over five minutes’ drive away from the park; you can also join the South West Coast Path here if you’re keen on traipsing beside Cornish cliffs. Make your way west to the furthest end of the peninsula – and the most westerly point in the UK – at Land’s End or surf the waves of Sennen nearby (both within 30 minutes' drive). Sticking to the coast, the cliffside Minack Theatre is 35 minutes’ drive away next to pretty Porthcurno beach if you’d like to watch a performance with a chance of spotting dolphins diving in and out of the water in the background. To rove towards a cove, Kynance on the Lizard Peninsula is 45 minutes away from Arch Lane Camping – head here during low tide to see this place in its full glory.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or motorhome site

Liked: This is the lowest price I have paid for camping in England. While it is basic, it does have everything you need; toilets, showers, washing up facility and rubbish disposal. The showers are particularly good, and novel, being in horse boxes. No wifi, so just used data. Would definitely use again.

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: Awesome base for exploring Cornwall. Close to amenities. Basic but clean eco facilities that suit the budget and environment conscious.

Disliked: Grass needs to be kept shorter, particularly with dogs around if owners don't clean up

Unpowered grass and earth tent or motorhome site

Liked: The no faff ease of arrival, the helpful and welcoming warden. The facilities were fantastically basic, horse box showers and eco toilets.

Disliked: Location was too close to the A30 and rail line. Meant there was constant noise.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or motorhome site

Unpowered grass and earth tent or motorhome site

Liked: Proper wild camping experience, very rustic and simple. Loads of space in between pitches, although there were no exact ‘pitches’ just a case of park where you want to, which helps it feel very relaxed. Very cheap for this area. Not a lot of strict rules to follow, which can feel a bit sterile sometimes. Just a nice, simple campsite. The on-site warden was LOVELY and so chilled, he definitely added to the relaxed atmosphere and we got to meet the owner which is always nice!

Disliked: I think the toilets and showers could be smartened up a little bit, fresh paint maybe(?) although the current look does add to the wild appeal so maybe they don’t need a paint! Also a little shelf in the shower for soap ect would be handy.
