  • Hurlers Stone Circles 10 minutes’ drive; Adrenalin Quarry 25 minutes
  • Two-acre camping field with modern facilities in a converted horse box
What say you to nearly wild camping with spectacular views? Stars and Moor in Bodmin Moor National Landscape certainly has views in spades – right to the distant south coast in fact – and what’s more, there are just a handful of off-grid camping pitches on site, all spread out across two acres of pasture surrounded by Cornish walling. All the pitches are on grass and you can pick your preferred spot on arrival. Vehicles are parked in a designated area, from which your gear is transported to the pitches in a wheelbarrow. Facilities in the converted horse trailer include hot showers and fully plumbed loos, and there’s ample hot water to make your alfresco washing up less of a chore – but please do note there’s no electricity on site. On-site entertainment is all about the views, which you can appreciate while cooking on your firepit – hire one on site, complete with a supply of firewood. The skies on cloudless nights are a glittering marvel that you can share with family and friends while cosying up around the fire. Pack walking boots for yomps on Bodmin Moor footpaths from your tent, and bring bikes for cycling on moorland tracks or canoes for adventures out on Siblyback Lake. Local amenities are a short stroll away in the village of Minions (20 minutes’ walk), where there’s a well-stocked shop and the highest tea room in Cornwall. Heading in the opposite direction are two pubs within 15 minutes’ walk.

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked Like another reviewer, I almost don’t want to tell people about this place! Here, you’re just a couple of minutes walk from being on the open moor with the sheep and cows and engine houses – it’s quite rare to have access that close in Cornwall. There are incredible views, reaching as far as the Cornish Alps in the west and Dartmoor in the east, but the trees around the site mean you don’t feel over-exposed to the elements should Bodmin weather descend.

The owners were very welcoming and helpful and the site is immaculately kept, with everything you need and nothing you don't. Plenty of space has been given for nature to thrive, with the meadow left to grow between tent spaces in the camping field. The first field has the nicest grass! I was expecting a full back-to-nature experience but was quietly pleased to find a fancy bathroom in a horse box, a fridge-freezer and a plug to charge phones!

The area has amazing places to explore, with tors, stone circles, quoits, Caradon mining district all walkable. It’s a shorter walk to the local (The Crows Nest) than you might assume when driving uphill to the site – just take the footpaths back down the valley. Bring supplies with you as there’s no local shop in either Darite or Crows Nest, though there is a farm shop the other side of Caradon Hill.

Access is as advertised – steep, tight and rocky with three gates to go through – but just follow the clear instructions provided and you’ll be grand. We managed the tight turn into the farm in a LWB VW (2m) with no problems but I wouldn't want to try it in anything much wider or be driving on and off site a lot. Advise once there, just park up, relax and enjoy!

Really friendly owners, lovely plot of land and great access to local…

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Clean, peaceful and open spaces. Amazing site situated high in the moors.
Amazing clear skies, just a few wild pitches so you feel solitude and calm.

Owners are lovely, helpful and work hard to run an excellent site.
Small facilities, a really good shower and loo, always clean.
Good hot water washing up area.
