  • Basic farm in the village of St Teath, close to a shop and pub
  • Padstow, Port Isaac and Tintagel Castle within a half-hour drive
  • Fresh sausages and free-range eggs for sale on site
Big Dunk’s certainly a guy with an eye for a view or two – the outlook from Big Dunk's Valley View Campsite is indeed a green and pleasant one. It’s hills, valleys and farmland pretty much as far as the eye can see from this quiet rural site in the village of St Teath, although on a clear day you may be able to see all the way to the highest point in Cornwall (Brown Willy, five miles away). When not gazing out at the vistas, Big Dunk fills his time tending his farm – sheep, pigs and chickens reside in the neighbouring fields, and you’re welcome to pop by and watch their antics. You may also be able to pick up sausages and free-range eggs to fry up for a tiptop brekkie. Other foodie bits can be picked up in the village, where there’s a shop, café and pub (all within a few minutes’ amble). Pitches themselves are pretty peaceful, with very little to distract from the chilled rural vibe. A trailer houses hand-pump flushing toilets and there’s a covered outdoor sink with mains water tap, but there are no showers. Refreshing swims and showers can be had for a small fee at a leisure centre four miles away should you so wish.

Local attractions

This is a fab spot for those who favour days of walking or cycling – there are loads of quiet country roads wending their way around the area, and you’re five miles from the Wenford Bridge end of the Camel Trail, an 18-mile traffic-free path along the disused railway line to Padstow. A popular walk from the site takes you through fields and woods for an hour or so to reach the Delabole slate quarry, the oldest working slate quarry in England and once the largest man-made hole in the whole world. Being just a couple of miles from the coast, it’s also easy to hit the coast path or visit some of Cornwall’s seaside attractions, including the fishing village of Port Isaac, atmospheric Tintagel Castle or foodie fave Padstow, all of which are within a half-hour drive. If you’re not up for leaving your rural retreat, have a chat with Big Dunk for info on the laser tag and paintball games he runs on another corner of his farm.
