  • Riverside camping near Bude
  • Woodland and wildlife walks, hammocks and free firepit use
  • Heated shower block; disabled shower and loo; games room on site
‘Campfires are allowed by the riverside,’ say the owners of Woodview Campsite near Bude in Cornwall, which is symbolic of such splendid pitching it's worth repeating again. Campfires allowed. By a riverside. In Cornwall. Oh, and the firepits are free to use, and by the river there are also hammocks. And swings. How excellent. Woodview Campsite is in north Cornwall on the Cornwall/Devon border (nifty for both Dartmoor and Exmoor National Park) and six or seven miles from Sandymouth, Crooklets and the other beaches at Bude. The many, many activities and things to see are covered in the local attractions section, but if you’re all of a flutter trying to decide what to do, just have a word with the Woodview team, a local family that know the ins and outs of all to see and do in Cornwall. On site, all is rather lovely: Woodview is an elevated position and sheltered by trees (clue in the name there). Wander south for the stream on the edge of the campsite that flows into the River Tamar, or branch out into the beech woodland a short stroll away for wildlife walks among the wildflowers. Facilities – all free – include a games room with table tennis, air hockey, Freeview TV, indoor football and snooker, and a shower and loo block with underfloor heating, baby changing and a disabled shower and loo. Laundry facilities are also available. If you’re not using one of the seven riverside firepits, barbecues can be used (sensibly please) in the main pitching area, with a side helping of views towards Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor.

Power optional concrete and grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Lovely friendly family campsite. Very clean facilities. Shop available to purchase lovely local produce. Fire pits area were a real bonus. Nice level pitches. Cars can be parked near to pitch for practical loading/ unloading.

Disliked: Pitch flanked by caravan and lodge for my family’s large tent which gave no view and limited space around it.

Swallows cabin

Liked: Stayed at swallows cabin, everything was more than expected in the cabin, clean ,tidy, Campsite nice an quiet and peaceful, shower's clean, also toilets, Games room was a big win for my son, to challenge me to ping pong, sadly he lost, Will look forward to book again when we holiday in the area again

Disliked: Had some wasps flying in the cabin everytime door was open, but that's nature, Could tip for the doors to have a fly screen to help with not getting natures visitors and added privacy

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Nice to hear you had a good time, and were able to triumph in the games room . Early autumn is definitely wasp season, as you say nature. Hope to see you again.

Power optional concrete and grass tent or trailer tent site (XL)

Liked: Quiet, rural location. Fire pits and hammocks were nice. Staff were friendly. Children enjoyed the games room and all the activities were free which was great. Toilets and showers were always really clean. Family bathrooms were great.

Disliked: The layout of the site meant that you had cars/tents on all sides and therefore we felt overlooked. Limited space on site for active outdoor play, for example ball games. Showers and toilets were limited, this wouldn’t be a problem outside of peak season. There are 9 showers but 1 is in an open air cubicle 4 are in pairs in 2 family bathrooms. The 4 showers in the main block are small and there is no dry changing space. Anything put on the hooks or in the back of door net provided gets wet. All facilities feel a bit dated Not within the control of the campsite I know, but there were several dogs staying which liked to bark quite a bit.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback. Happy to see you found the site clean, and friendly. The playing area is focused on the huge indoor barn, as the weather can be wet ! There are 2 swings outside , and the area by the fire pits and the stream is very popular . I believe you had 2 dogs, maybe others were reacting to them. There is also a large disabled /baby changing shower room

Power optional concrete and grass tent or trailer tent site (XL)

Liked: - Peaceful - remote - relaxing - hammocks and fire pits great additon to the site - games room ideal for young children to keep occupied - has two swings but would benefit perhaps from a small children’s park? -Polite staff. - clean facilities

Disliked: - single adults would utilise the family showering rooms. Which delayed your day with children as the cubicle showers weren’t big enough for more than one person - The onsite shop was somewhat over priced, paid £1.50 for an Asda own washing up liquid which would cost between £0.69/£1.15. I understand making a profit, but this was a large amount. - 2 female and 2 male showers and toilet facilities in one building which was hectic of a morning. - 20/25 minute drive to actual bude town and beach. - wifi could do with boosters around site. Poor connection when a number of people are utilising it.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback. The onsite shop is there as a convenience for campers. Stocking it, and staffing it for 12 hours a day does not leave room for a profit. There are 9 showers, 3 of which are large rooms . Bude is only about 8 miles away and the nearest beaches only 6, so there is a choice . The FREE indoor facilities for entertainment include hockey, football, table tennis, badminton, basketball, air hockey and pool tables . There is also an TV. The wifi has boosters around the site, and we are in constant discussion with providers to improve the service . Nice to hear you enjoyed the campfires and hammocks

From Bude, follow the A39 towards Bideford. After going through Kikhampton for a mile on the Bideford side, turn right for Bradworthy then left at the T-junction. You should see Woodview Campsite signs. Follow these until you come to a crossway in the woods. There is another sign here for Woodview Campsite - turn left and the site is 100 metres along on the left. From Bideford, follow the A39 towards Bude for 10 miles. Just after the Cornwall/Devon border sign, take the first left turning by a bungalow. Keep straight on, following Woodview Campsite signs for 2.5 miles. If you miss this turning, take the next left off the A39.

Local attractions

Within 20 minutes of Woodview Campsite, holidaymakers of all flavours will find beaut beaches, old seaside villages, family days out, coastal walks, sporty days and King Arthur legends at nearby Tintagel. On days when not cooking over a campsite firepit or barbecue – because even with riverside firepits available one should sample quite a bit of Cornwall and Devon produce – pubs serving food and many tiptop restaurants are close by in the area of Bude, Hartland and Bideford (hang around in summer for carnivals and family events). Bude’s three beaches, Sandymouth, Summerleaze and Crooklets, are popular with families and those dipping into watersports; surf schools and surf gear hire shops are plentiful on this part of coast. Tamar Lake is also nearby to try sailing, fishing and canoeing, and the Bude Tourist Information & Canal Visitor Centre has info on navigating Bude Canal by kayak or rowing boat. On land, Bude is on the National Cycle Network NCN3 linking to the Camel Trail; both have gentle rides suitable for families. The South West Coast Path can be picked up at Bude tourist information centre and covers superbly scenic walks from Bude to Boscastle, Marsland Mouth and Crackington Haven. Also within 20 minutes, land fans have tenpin bowling and six levels of play at Harlequinns Leisure, and to rock climbing, tennis, squash, horse riding and golf: ask the Woodview team for their recommendations. To the south, Tintagel and its castle are among the most visited places in Britain: stop at Boscastle on the way for the great Museum of Witchcraft, and carry on down the coast to Newquay for Newquay Zoo or a day at the Crealy Great Adventure Park in Wadebridge. Cobbled Clovelly is to the north: clop around here for the day to see the town’s renowned steep street and have an astronomical day out at The Milky Way Adventure Park. Bodmin Moor, Exmoor and Dartmoor are all within an hour’s drive, and an abundance of other family days out are easy to get to from Woodview, such as the Eden Project at St Austell, Launceston’s Tamar Otter Sanctuary and Trethorne Leisure Park, and famed The Big Sheep at Abbotsham.
