  • Back-to-basics meadow camping in the South Downs National Park, Surrey
  • A 30-minute drive to Birdland, Farnham Maltings and Petworth House
  • Grass pitches with access to walks on site; pubs a 10-minute drive
Sitting on the Surrey and West Sussex borders, Castle Copse is a wild haven for walkers and indeed all outdoors enthusiasts. With spectacular views of the South Downs National Park, and the National Trust’s Black Down just a 15 minutes’ drive away, you and the dogs are all set for adventures with an ancient vibe. In these parts, you’re following in the footsteps of traders, shepherds and quarrymen, who have used the peaceful sunken lanes and old drovers’ roads for thousands of years. Even today you could spend hours yomping through flower-rich meadows or ancient woodland and practically never see another soul. Prefer to explore by car? You can pootle around luxurious apartments and gorgeous gardens at stately piles like Petworth House, or pick up artisan jewellery and local landscape art from Farnham Maltings. If you’re travelling with kids, reward their good behaviour with raptor displays and cheeky parrots at Birdworld (all 30 minutes). This being no-frills pop-up camping, there are few facilities on site, but luckily it’s really close to the old-world market town of Haslemere (10 minutes). There you can fill up on essentials in the supermarkets or take your pick of burger bars, pubs and takeaways.
