  • Simple pitches at a West Sussex farm near the village of Kingsfold
  • Leith Hill, Nymans and Gatwick Aviation Museum all 20 minutes' drive
  • Two lakes on site, plus Western town area (open on selected dates)
What will you find when you arrive for a stay at Wattlehurst Farm? Well, for starters this West Sussex farm site has not one but two lakes on site (known as the ‘big lake’ and ‘small lake’), providing a home for wildlife and some pretty views – especially at sunset, when the lovely colours shimmer across the water. Other things to expect from a stay here include simple facilities in the form of a toilet block and washing-up area – but no hot water, showers, wifi or electrical connections. It’s a family-friendly place that also welcomes dogs, and you’ll be allowed to bring along a barbecue for your outdoor cooking. And here’s something you probably didn’t expect – this site has its own Western town called ‘Deadwood’, which is run by a local re-enactment group. It’s open every other week, welcoming visitors to its saloon bar, school and forge (and with its own jail – naughty kids, take note). Ask on site to find out if there’s anything going on while you’re staying. The farm is just outside the village of Kingsfold, which has a good pub that you can reach in about 10 minutes along a public footpath for a meal and some drinks. Just outside the pub is a bus stop for services to nearby Horsham and Dorking (both handy places for shopping and about 10-15 minutes’ drive away). If you’re a light sleeper it’s worth noting the site is under the Gatwick flight path – something that’s a bonus if you like to lie back on your pitch and watch planes overhead.

Liked: The area is lovely and very green nice when just looking to get away from the city. I loved the ponds. Drinking water is available and the toilets were clean. Greeted by Sarah (?) who seemed lovely and welcoming.

Disliked: Its a bit close to a main road so throughout the night I could hear all the traffic. Was fine just took me a bit longer to settle down. Thought I had gotten lost at first as my gps stopped me at the NYE building.

Liked: Love the location. Right on the water and easy close walks with the dog. My 4 year old loved seeing the planes and it’s really not that bad with them going overhead. Will defo be back. Well thought out basic site.

Liked: Excellent clean, new toilet block. Benches to use next to the pitch Friendly owners Flat, well maintained pitches Good price / value

Disliked: Too close to Gatwick.. clearly not much they can do about that, it's a great campsite but I'll unlikely return because of the flight path being overhead. Fantastic if you're a plane spotter.

Liked: The campsite was exceptionally beautiful, well-organized, clean, and safe. The managers were incredibly friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our Saturday night stay, immersing ourselves in the mesmerizing night sky filled with stars. In the morning, we relished a peaceful and natural walk around the area. Also, we had the opportunity to visit DeadWood, which turned out to be a truly memorable experience for us. We are definitely looking forward to coming back soon.

Local attractions

Staying at Wattlehurst Farm you’ll be just outside the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so there are plenty of places around to get out for a walk – popular spots like Leith Hill, Holmbury Hill and Tillingbourne waterfall are all about 20 minutes’ drive away. If you like your views more landscaped, make a trip to the National Trust gardens at Nymans (also 20 minutes’ drive) or Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (25 minutes). With Gatwick Airport not far off, this is a fine area for flight enthusiasts – and you can get up close to various planes at Gatwick Aviation Museum (20 minutes) and Wings Aviation Museum (25 minutes). Flying of a different kind is on display at Huxley’s Birds of Prey Centre and Gardens (15 minutes). For more involved day trips, you can get to the seaside at Brighton in about 50 minutes, or head to Holmwood station (10 minutes) for the hour-long train ride to London. Closer to home, outings might include Go Ape Crawley, Fishers Farm Park or a more grownup trip to Bolney Wine Estate (all 25 minutes away).
