  • Peaceful, dog-friendly pop-up site three miles from the South Downs
  • A 10-minute walk to South Downs Link; 40 minutes’ drive to Brighton
  • Barbecues and firepits permitted; short walk to shops, pubs and cafés
If there ever was a peaceful place in the South Sussex countryside, The Slips is certainly it. As a matter of fact, this site is also in a historical location on the outskirts of Henfield, which was first occupied way back in the Stone Age. With the South Downs National Park three miles to the south, it’s no wonder this site is dog-friendly with the number of gorgeous walks around too… One of the longest of them all is the South Downs Link, which begins half a mile away (or in other words, just 10 minutes’ walk down the road). Tracing the old railway line, this track will take you past Bramber Castle, Southwater Country Park and old railway stations, depending on how you let your feet take you. First, you might want to stop off at the pub at the beginning of the trail to grab some fuel for the journey. There’s a great selection of restaurants, shops, bars and cafés further into Henfield if you’re looking to browse all your different options first. As a pop-up site, The Slips has simple facilities, including portable toilet and wifi access. You’re welcome to roll up with your own barbecue or firewood too; it's easy to stock your grill with bits from the food shop in the village.

Liked: Idilic field in Sussex offering a basic get away. As described, this site is a field with electric hock up and water supply to each site. Only a port-a-loo and no showers. The local town is a short walk away approx 10mins. There you will find a supermarket local, pub and cafe.

Disliked: Nothing

Power optional grass tent site

Liked: We absolutely love this little village and the camp site is close to a lovely little pub - the camp site is clean and super dog friendly - this is our second time camping here and we will definitely be back x

Disliked: We didn’t really dislike anything, showers would be a bonus but we don’t really stay here for more than a night so not a problem for us

Liked: A lovely simple field. Take your pick of pitches. Plenty of room, no hassle. A local pub 5 minutes walk away.

Disliked: Only one portaloo, but no problem as it was relatively quiet when we were there.

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: This was the most awful place we visit. Paid 30 pounds for a grass field without nothing. Only electric. The toilet was portable and disgusting and full of sh*t. This is no camping place . I asked for a refund because we left after one day but didn’t got any reaction.

Power optional grass tent site

Liked: Great location, peaceful and quiet. Flexible about arrival and departure times.

Disliked: Portaloo needed emptying. Grass could have been cut. Odd set up with a caravan that seemed to be permanently sited there but occupants had a noisy motorbike and lots of vehicles coming and going.

Liked: The campsite was flat and simple. Everything you need for a camping trip to make it as wild as possible.

Disliked: Did not have any sort of contact with the campsite owners but this was not a real issue.

Liked: Peaceful two small green fields with beautiful oak trees! Site owner helpful with directions. Lovely local town within walking distance for barbecue foods for a family social in the sun! ☀️ Surpassed expectations following reading reviews that made me a little concerned. Female staying overnight on own & I feel safe.

Disliked: Bins full so if site busy, would benefit from more or regular emptying. 2nd field had a small area with burnt rubbish in that’s unsightly & needs tidying up - doesn’t affect campers but spoils the ambience.

Liked: Location was pleasant

Disliked: The facilities were barely tolerable, while there were taps and hookups at the pitches, that was it, no other facilities apart from one foul portaloo for the entire field, which ran out of water for hand washing on Friday night and had still not been topped up by the time we left on Sunday. They just about got away with it during our stay when there were probably no more than a dozen people on site in 4 caravans/campers, but that was only about a quarter of the site's capacity, for a full site it would have been a complete disaster. There are no showers, nowhere to wash up, nothing else.

Local attractions

Keen on visiting the South Downs National Park? No wonder, when there are historical sites such as the Jack And Jill Windmills (15 minutes’ drive) and the National Trust's Cissbury Ring (half an hour), as well as the National Trust’s Devil's Dyke (15 minutes) for gorgeous valley hikes with historical farms and tearooms. Brighton (40 minutes) might also take your fancy. The seafront is particularly splendid, especially with all the activities that happen down at Brighton beach and the Palace Pier. You might want to go sightseeing, starting with the Royal Pavilion, or pedal out of the city on the Undercliff Path past Brighton Marina and chalk cliffs. If you don’t get too distracted by Brighton’s aquarium or walking down The Lanes, there are more peaceful walks to be had at the Sussex Prairie Garden (five minutes) or the Woods Mill Nature Reserve - Sussex Wildlife Trust (five minutes). As for a quick look at the local history, the Henfield Museum (25 minutes’ walk) has a costume collection, old art and other historic artefacts.
