  • Kent glamping pods on a former working farm in the village of Linton
  • A 20-minute drive to Leeds Castle, and 25 minutes to Diggerland Kent
  • Insulated units with private firepits; playground and pétanque on site
Tucked away in Linton, one of the smallest villages in Kent, the glamping pods at Rankins Farm sit on a 15-acre plot owned by the same family since 1963. At just an hour from central London, the site lends itself to easy getaways from the city to the Kent countryside and its many, many castles, wildlife parks and family attractions. Any worries about the British weather can be forgotten as the smart wooden pods are well insulated, with underfloor heating to ensure maximum cosy comfort. They’re really spacious inside – almost Tardis-like, in fact – and each contains a double bed and sofa bed, an ensuite bathroom and a fitted kitchen with a fridge and mini-freezer, an electric hob and microwave. Bedding is all provided, so all you need to bring with you are clothes and food, and you can arrange for supermarket deliveries straight to your pod for extra convenience. As each pod is self-contained with its own private alfresco eating area and firepit, they are handy for romantic getaways or weekends with pals. Families should find plenty to keep kids amused too, as the site has an adventure playground, pétanque court and lots of space to run around in safety.

Local attractions

History abounds in the country of Kent, with ancient castles liberally scattered across the countryside. First among equals is Leeds Castle (20 minutes’ drive), with its sumptuous interiors, zipwires and schedule of themed events, while Hever (50 minutes) has extensive water gardens to admire. Fans of all things military can also visit Dover Castle (an hour) and discover its secret World War II tunnels. The kids may well object to all this exposure to history, but you can reward them with easy cycle trails through rare trees and Go Ape treetop challenges at Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (25 minutes). Diggerland Kent (35 minutes) is another good bet for family days out, with mini tractors to drive, holes to dig and views over Rochester from the Diggerland Skyshuttle. The animal-lovers among you should be content too, with rare leopards and cheetahs to spot at the Big Cat Sanctuary (20 minutes), and smaller fry in the shape of cheeky farm animals to pet at Buttercups Sanctuary For Goats (10 minutes). Port Lympne Safari Park (50 minutes) is also known for its conservation work, with endangered bears, rhinos and gorillas in spacious enclosures.
