Sunnyside Farm Camping: Views of the countryside

General

  • Small and simple farm site on the Coast to Cathedral cycle route
  • Canterbury, Howlett's Zoo and Wingham Wildlife Park within 15 minutes
  • Half an hour's drive from Dover, Deal and Walmer Castles

Partial to a pedal-powered pilgrimage? The 50-mile Coast to Cathedral route across the Kent Downs between Canterbury and Dover passes right by this fab farm site.

Sunnyside Farm Camping is a small and simple affair, on a farm whose family have been tilling the soil and rearing livestock here for generations. Having been farming the Pett Bottom valley so long they’ve got a road named after them, the family running the site know the area like no-one else can, and they’re happy to advise on biking and walking paths nearby. By car, it's a little under five minutes’ drive from here to the hamlet of Pett Bottom, and a 15-minute journey to the ancient cathedral city of Canterbury.

After each year’s harvest, a herd of sheep joins the cows, chickens and arable crops here, making for a lively chorus of countryside sounds: when pottering across to collect fresh breakfast eggs from the porch, taking in the views over the Kent Downs, you could be holidaying in Chaucer’s time... (The amenities belong firmly in this era though: clean, basic and bright shared washrooms housed in a wooden farm building.)

And if you prefer cantering to cycles and strolls? Pay a call to the riding centre in the village, and trek the chalk hills on horseback for added historical vibes.

Please note

The park caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Lovely and quiet. Loads of room between pitches. Portable loo in the filed and the shower and flush toilet directly opposite. The owners were lovely and really helpful. My little boy loved watching the tractors pass the gate each day and we all enjoyed going for walks in the woods. The site provides a BBQ so you can cook your own food. A fresh water tap is located close to the toilet so you can easily fill your water bottles. Pub opposite the field which serves delicious food and drinks. We all loved staying here and have all said that we would happily stay here again.

Very friendly people, they couldn't have been more helpful, and they let us feed the orphan lambs. The setting is very peaceful with the only sound being birdsong and the odd cow baying. Really enjoyed the lambs, chickens and 'Fly' the sheepdog.
Be under no illusion, this is basic camping on a shallow hillside (yet very pleasant) field a few yards from a working farm, with a tap for fresh water and a single toilet & shower. This is exactly the sort of back to basics camping we enjoy. The few negative reviews on here seem to be due to unrealistic expectations.
If you like the great outdoors and escaping from mod-cons, Sunnyside Farm is perfect, would definately recommend

Really lovely site. Small and literally right next to a very nice pub.

The farm house next to the site had fresh eggs, short drive to a farm shop and a lot of walking paths just next to the site. Closest one starts next to the pub and you can walk to a vineyard and a few alpacas. Short drive to beautiful Canterbury as well.

There are TWO sunnyside campsites in the area! It's best to follow the post code, I hadn't noticed that in the booking notes, it's clear there. Just something to note!

All in all a very unsettling night noise from barking dog on sight.07/04/2021

Location was nice but spoiled by poor facilities and noisy family with uncontrollable dog! Kept awake all night!!

    Disliked:

Grass field badly cut with wet grass cuttings not cleared so got everywhere in tents etc. One portaloo in field. One small toilet and shower which was blocked and did not operate very well. Water then stopped working.

From the manager...

I'm sorry your stay wasn't as expected. Please make sure you read the details before booking as we don't claim to be anything but a basic campsite. It's been a bit tricky with all this wet weather but we have tried our best with cutting the grass.

If other guests are not adhering to our late night noise policy, please let us know as we more than happy to ask them to lower the noise.

Unfortunately the lack of water was beyond our control. Over 5000 people were affected by a burst water pipe and the water board have been digging out all weekend to try and resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

It's a shame you have decided to write these comments despite some of these reasons being out of our control.

Directions

Please note there are two Sunnyside Farms on Pitchup near Canterbury. This one is the one near the village of Bridge; use the site postcode for the satnav.

From the A2 heading towards Dover, take the second exit for Canterbury/Bridge. Turn right going over the A2 and follow the road to a crossroads (look for signs to the Duck Inn). Head straight across into Station Road and then take the second left, signposted Pett Bottom. Go under the old railway bridge; the site is at the next turning on the right (about 1.5 miles). If you get to the Duck Inn you have just passed the farm!

From the A2 London bound, turn off for Bridge/Bishopsbourne. Go through the village of Bridge and as you head out away from the village up the hill, turn left at the crossroads into Station Road. Take the second left, signposted Pett Bottom. Go under the old railway bridge and the site is at the next turning on the right (about 1.5 miles). If you get to the Duck Inn you have just passed the farm!

Local attractions

When you’ve walked, cycled and hacked across Kent, there’s only one option left: make for Canterbury (15 minutes’ drive) and punt or canoe your way down the Stour, stopping off for wanders of the Roman walls and guided Chaucer themed town walks, to finish up in the cathedral.

For more adventures in the ancient, the trio of Deal, Walmer and Dover Castles are all half an hour’s drive away and full of sights from times gone by, including a Roman lighthouse, secret World War II tunnels and the Duke of Wellington’s seaside pad. History with a side serving of bells and whistles can be had with a steam ride on the restored Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway (40 minutes).

Half an hour away, the Sandwich and Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve serves up cliffs and saltmarshes, with seal colonies offshore in winter and summer cuckoos and nightingales turning the place into a sound garden. Or visit Britain’s only desert: Dungeness National Nature Reserve (50 minutes) is a landscape loved by waders and migratory birds, made extra picworthy by the looming power station.

For more contained encounters with wildlife, try Wingham Wildlife Park, a large collection of small creatures with exotic names such as tamanduas and cloud rats, while bigger beasts including Kent’s only giant anteaters stalk the plains at Howlett’s Zoo; both are half an hour away.

Must see

  • St Augustine's Abbey (5.6 kilometres)
  • Canterbury Tales (5.7 kilometres)
  • Canterbury Cathedral (5.8 kilometres)
