  • Glamping in a hand-built herdsman's hut on a 100-acre working farm
  • In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to Canterbury
  • Double bed, woodburner, kitchen, bathroom, firepit and decking
Now this really is one of a kind. East Kent site The Herdsman's Hut at Broxhall Farm is home to a swishly modern herdsman’s hut hand-built by the site owners: this is most certainly comfortable glamping… Herdsman’s Hut is set on a 100-acre working cattle farm, in a peaceful part of countryside in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s surrounded by a vast network of footpaths for gentle rural ambles – set off under your own steam or ask on site for recommendations – and is on the National Cycle Networks routes 16 and 17. The hut has exposed oak beams; a double bed with linen provided; a kitchenette with kettle and hob; a woodburning stove with logs, and an ensuite bathroom with shower and flushing toilet. Decking is outside, along with a private barbecue area and a firepit for easy evenings sizzling supper or sitting by the flames. And if you don’t fancy even looking at the barbecue tongs? Food is easily foraged from here: if you don’t fancy making a snack in the hut kitchenette, the farm’s local pub is a short toddle over the fields (bookings recommended for meals; thi place is rightly popular). You can start your day fully fuelled up too, as breakfast baskets with homemade granola are available to order. Although the farm has been set up as a secluded retreat, it’s easily accessible for quick escapes, as Canterbury is 15 minutes’ drive away and London under a couple of hours.

Local attractions

The farm is well placed for Kent activities and attractions, whether you’re up for countrysidie or city days, getting active or staying serene. The excellent old city of Canterbury is six and a half miles from the farm and well worth at least a day. Stuff to see (all musts) includes the UNESCO-listed cathedral, the Roman walls and the Roman Museum; also add to the itinerary a punt along the River Stour, a look at the Marlowe Theatre and a potter about the city’s medieval centre and cobbled streets. More history is nearby at 11th-century Dover Castle (25 minutes), hailed as ‘the key to England’ because of its illustrious history and strategic defensive position. Roman fans who liked the walls and museum in Canterbury can roam along to the castle to see one of Dover’s two Roman lighthouses: there are only three preserved in the world. An absolute no from the kids? Cart them along to one of the regular family-friendly events at the castle instead. Towards the coast, take a stroll on the sand and shingle beaches of Whitstable (30 minutes), or have an arty day at the Turner Contemporary in Margate, 45 minutes away.
