Planning a rural retreat in Kent? Then take a closer look at Westover Smarden, a satisfyingly simple adults-only farm site located half an hour inland from the pretty coastal towns of Hythe and Rye. This peaceful eight-acre farmstead is located about 20 minutes' walk from the quiet village of Smarden, where there's a pub, a tennis court and a cricket pitch. Handily, Westover Smarden is also located roughly a quarter of a mile from another well-reviewed pub, so you’ll have plenty of choice. The site itself is a relaxed kind of place, with basic facilities like a chemical toilet disposal point and a standpipe keeping guests supplied with fresh running water. Pet owners, meanwhile, will like the fact that well-behaved dogs are allowed here throughout the camping season. At Westover Smarden, the pitches aren't all crammed into a tiny area, so there's ample room for vehicle parking as well as an adjacent field that’s available for picnics and strolling (when it's not being used for grazing by the farmstead's livestock). Every part of the site has vistas over trees and neighbouring farmland, meaning you'll feel surrounded by nature throughout your time here.

  • The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.
  • Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.
  • The campground/park caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.
  • Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the passenger door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.
  • There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.
  • Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.

A peaceful, small campsite in a lovely rural spot. Owners are friendly. Basic, clean facilities and a flat field are appreciated. Road noise noted but overall atmosphere is relaxed. Excellent value for a back-to-basics stay. No showers.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Lovely owners. Very friendly welcome. Beautiful field which was surprisingly empty. This campsite has one WC and a washing up area. What more do you need? It's close enough to Headcorn to watch the planes, and to the Big cat sanctuary to hear the lions at night. Great location just to have some time in nature and wind down.

Liked Relaxed and peaceful environment. The adult only aspect was especially good on the bank holiday weekend. Owners were very friendly, but left you to it, which was just what we wanted.

Liked Small peaceful site. Toilet and wash area were sufficient and clean. Owners are charming welcoming and friendly. The campsite was nice and flat even ground. Beautiful area of the country and can hear the big cats in the distance. Local wildlife was amazing and the sheep in the field at the back were cute with their new born lambs

Disliked Not the campsites fault but just a warning for others that WiFi and mobile services in this area is poor. So if you are someone who needs their connection just bear that in mind. I personally think it’s actually a positive to fully be able to switch off from the noise of the world and media but my other half found it frustrating 🙈

Liked Ivan and cass were lovely hosts and lovely people , enjoyed catching up with them and learning a bit about the old farm , pitch was just right as we had a bit of shade and it did get hot over Bank Holiday weekend , it was nice to just chill and do not a lot to be honest , good couple of days .

Disliked Not a lot to be honest , got what we wanted and what we paid for , quiet simple couple of days away in the country , local pubs etc .

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Excellent basic good value campsite very peaceful and handy for the Dover ferry. Arrived late in our camper. We were the only people there. Ivan the farmer met us and was v friendly with good ideas of where to eat. Quiet, nice views. Yes it's only a portaloo and no showers but they don't pretend otherwise. Level pitches. Good for our dog.

Liked Ideal site for those who are looking for the freedom of a not over-manged, rural camp site. Very basic facilities, but ok for short stay (no shower). No obvious restrictions regarding arrival and departure time. The road can be a bit noisy, depending on the day time, but quiet in the evening/night.

In the immediate vicinity, spots like the county's Big Cat Sanctuary (10 minutes' drive) are sure to please animal lovers, while adventurous visitors can try out wing walking, parachuting and other aeronautical activicites at Headcorn Aerodrome, 10 minutes away from base. Next up, treat yourself to a glass or two of English wine at one of Kent's popular vineyards like the one at Biddenden (15 minutes), or head to Tenterden (30 minutes) for its historic steam railway, microbrewery and beer festival. After, stroll through the grand grounds of country estates like Sissinghurst, Scotney and Leeds Castle, all of which are within half an hour's drive of base. Another big plus of staying here is that you can reach the beach relatively easily, with Camber Sands (40 minutes) for those bucket and spade days as well as maritime heritage spots like Hythe and Rye, both of which are reachable within 30 minutes.
