The Lakes Rookley

9.7

This campground/park does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • 23 acres of parkland a short drive from Shanklin, Ventnor and Sandown
  • Beaches, zoo and Carisbrooke Castle within 20 minutes' drive
  • Heated swimming pools, playground, bar and restaurant on site

Families, sorted. The Lakes Rookley is in the centre of the Isle of Wight, for easy access to top attractions pretty much everywhere you look.

Three of the island's best beaches – Shanklin, Ventnor and Sandown – are within a 20-minute drive, as are the swish surrounds of Carisbrooke Castle and the hootingly good fun of theme park Blackgang Chine (the fave Isle of Wight activity of tasteful Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint). Sister theme park Robin Hill Adventure Park and Gardens is also within a few miles as the crow flies, and the waterfalls of Shanklin Chine, and the farmers’ market of Newport… (how very fab are compact little isles like Wight)

All is caw-some on site at Rookley too: 23 acres of smart parkland crammed with activities; indoor and outdoor heated pools (free), and a kids’ playground. Island eats – and drinks – are sorted at the on-site bar, restaurant, with many more options available in the pubs, cafés and restaurants of Godshill ‘model’ village about a mile away.

The whole site was lovely, staff very friendly & helpful.

The IOW shuttle bus should lay on a later service after the festival ends. We were told when we mentioned this that it’s an external arrangement, but as the original info came from you & we paid the money to you, we do feel your input to extend this service is important, £5 per trip is not cheap & one more later bus should be available.

Clean and modern caravan with plenty of shelving and cupboard storage. Beds were larger than the Commodore grade van we stayed in at a Parkdean site the prior week. Deck with furniture and private parking space take the stress out of navigating around other holiday makers! Towels provided was my personal favourite, not having to juggle to dry everyone’s towels before we went home. Large enough to move around en suite and the splash backs behind the sinks just make the bathroom spaces cleaner and nicer to be in. Fridge and freezer were full size and could fit a weeks worth of shopping in. Loved the water activities at the on-site lake. Play park and arcade were enough to keep 8yo entertained for the short stops we made at these. Costa coffee served at the bar was great. Lunch variety at the restaurant wasn’t amazing for the £50 we spent on the one meal (eg the kids had to settle for a sandwich favour), but the food was tasty and good quality. Location perfect for trips out and to minimise the time spent in the car with the baby. Fab pub with large playground round the corner is a bonus when the kids have more energy than you at the end of the day.

We loved the caravan and the site. I only have small recommendations that would just make the stay that extra 5* . Grubby high chair - get the IKEA £12 ones that take up less space and can be cleaned easily, I def sent our high chair back cleaner than it was last delivered to me. Only 3 water glasses between 4 people. Coat hooks to keep the floor and furniture clear, have to keep moving stuff around to use each space otherwise.

We stayed in one of the Lakehouses - absolutely fantastic. Private, well spaced from each other and inside was very spacious, clean and well equipped. The staff on site were really pleasant and helpful. Checkin (and out) was quick and easy. The Lakehouses have a great view of the lake and a nice decking area to the front to allow you to sit out and make the most of the peace and quiet. To site is surrounded by fields and the views are great too!

The white-goods in the Lakehouse were a real bonus - a full size fridge and decent sized freezer, a Dishwasher and a Washer/Dryer.

The ensuites were spacious and the showers really pleasant.

    Disliked:

Couple of minor niggles (I do stress minor as we would absolutely come back in a heartbeat!)

There was only 1 wine glass available (plenty of standard tumblers, but just the 1 wine glass). We suspect there were a few more to start with but perhaps had broken and just not been replaced. There were also only 2 mugs - again, perhaps there were more originally but have broken?

It was great to have a dishwasher, but they only provided 2 dishwasher tablets. For a 4 day trip this wasn't enough so it made the Dishwasher a bit redundant after the first 2 days. It's obviously a 'nice to have' but perhaps supplying a tablet for each day of the stay would be helpful for the future?

The only other complaint we had was that there was no Wifi in the Lakehouse. There was some available at the main building, but it wasn't accessible from the accommodation. Again, it's a nice to have as we had our mobile data/4G to use, but it was a bit odd that in these nice, modern Lakehouses, something we tend to take for granted these days, wasn't available.

None of the above would stop us going back - these are really just 'nice to haves'

Local attractions

Godshill village, a five-minute drive away, was the venue for the first Isle of Wight festival way back in 1968 and is now best known for its model village, a 1:10 scale of it and the old village of Shanklin. (Such is its detail that it has the model village modelled within the model, and one within that… no doubt you'll have great amusement introducing this concept to the kids.)

Both Blackgang and Robin Hill parks are Isle of Wight institutions and beautifully bonkers in their mix of activities: expect land, water and pirate barrel rides; mazes, giant snakes and ladders and themed playgrounds for toddlers and up. Both have a considerable countryside and wildlife bent too and include falconry displays, environmental exhibitions and woodland gardens with butterfly garden and Treehouse Woodland Centre at Robin Hill.

Westwards, another must-do is The Needles Park and beach chairlift at Alum Bay’s multi-coloured cliffs and the stunning walk along the beach to Alum Bay Chine. The Isle of Wight Coast Path loops through here – as it does all along the coastline – and is part of around 70 miles of coastline and around 500 miles of footpaths to pedal and walk.
