  • Award-winning park in a nine-acre wildlife haven
  • Carefully managed to attract and enhance local wildlife
  • Barbecue areas, picnic tables and well-kept amenities
It’s all about the three Rs at award-winning Heathfield Farm Camping on the Isle of Wight… Or possibly four. Or five… These nine acres of countryside are decidedly relaxed and rural; the well-kept amenities have been recently refurbished; and, as it’s a wildlife haven, it’s a fairly reasonable bet you’ll see a resident red squirrel or two: Heathfield has been the recipient of many David Bellamy Gold Conservation Awards and carefully manages its habitat to attract local birds and beasties. Running around is a breeze too, with a wildflower meadow for canines to roll around in and a roomy playing field for kids to play ball games and generally let off steam – parents can ensure relaxation while this happens by prepping dinner/supping wine at the adjacent barbecue areas and picnic tables. Specially planted native trees and shrubs shelter most of the park’s roomy and marked pitches, all of which are level, easily accessible and with electric hook-up. Although Heathfield has a remote and rural feel, its West Wight location is only a mile from the shops and eating emporia of Freshwater village. Once you’re ready to venture out, the site's tourist information office has stacks of literature on what to do locally, and the information board on site has maps with colour coded walks into bridlepaths of the surrounding countryside. Even more handily, the island’s bus network has a stop outside the park – just the ticket for some restful roaming…

Powered grass site (no pets)

Liked: Loved the site vibe, relaxing stay. Staff most helpful. Good location for shops, access to pub etc.

Disliked: No dislikes. Comment though: not sure if three male showers would be enough if site full. I’d live with it as site was well looked after.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Warm welcome to a very comfortable campsite. Many personal touches that supported a positive visit - BBQ bricks, herb garden, convenient water taps, generous level pitches. Short walk to village for delicious fish & chips and any additional food needs (local Sainsburys). Walks identified around the area. Spotlessly clean, supportive friendly site team. Dog and child friendly.

Disliked: Nothing.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Location was perfect - so many options. Lovely support team on site. Appreciated dog meadow for morning dog stretch - especially convenient first thing. Clean everywhere. We had some appalling weather whilst there but the site had great facilities and all soon recovered (lots of comradarie with other guests over shared experience). Herb garden was a lovely personal touch. Hoping to come back next year to do the 7 mile walk!

Local attractions

Everywhere on the Isle of Wight is easily reachable by bus or car in the short sort of time that makes the eyes of London commuters water, but if you want to start off on the west side there’s more than enough here to keep all ages happy. Freshwater’s large village (former home of Tennyson, poetry peeps) is edged by the chalk cliffs of Freshwater Bay and its beach, a mix of sand, pebbles and waves popular with watersporters. The 67 miles of spectacularly scenic trail that is the Isle of Wight Coastal Path include a patch through Freshwater: walk two miles from Heathfield to Yarmouth to access the 14-mile walk to Brighstone, and from there the eight miles to Niton. If 67 miles of coastline isn’t enough, the Isle of Wight has over 500 miles of public pathways through towns and villages, over downs and fields, up hills and through woodland: guided tours, including fossil walks, are available all over the island and a walking festival is run every spring and autumn.
