  • Spacious back to basics site in the South Downs National Park
  • Within half an hour's drive of Chichester and Portsmouth
  • Next to woodland with fab views; half an hour's walk from local pub
A secluded, simple site in the middle of the South Downs National Park? Splendid. Those who look for space and fine views while on a rural break should consider a stay at Clarefield Copse Wild Camping, in a quiet corner of Hampshire 15 minutes’ drive from Petersfield. As you might expect from a spot inside a national park, the views from here are pretty fab – as is the amount of space around the place from which to admire them. The owners have kept things low key so as not to interfere with their natural surrounds, simply installing a shower and toilets (regularly cleaned) and a drinking water supply, leaving plenty of open space to play games, light a barbie and construct a campfire. Bike rides and walks are top activities around these parts – start by taking a wander by the lake next to the site or on local footpaths, or, just maybe, strolling to the nearest pub in half an hour or so. Many a mile of trail runs through the national park, and there’s much more strolling to be done in nearby National Trust properties or on day trips to Chichester and Portsmouth (both half an hour away by car).

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked: Could be a nice place in the summer time we arrived in May

Disliked: Unfortunately we arrived and the field was water logged and we couldn't stay, the owner agreed to refund our money.

From the manager: Hello Im sorry i missed your calls on Saturday. Its been an extremely busy few days with wife and new born in the hospital but this is not your concern. The front of site was pretty wet but the pitches were actually dry. I wish I had not missed your calls and maybe we could have smoothed everything out and you would have had an enjoyable weekend. I had someone on site to help out with this but its a big site and he would not have seen you and i missed your calls to let me know you had arrived. Anyway everything should be much smoother soon and the sun should be drying everything out as we speak. It truly is a beautiful site and perfect for nature lovers and people looking for some peace and quiet. Maybe you would consider coming again in the summer once everything has dried up. All the best Angus

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked: Good view

Disliked: There was no reception or even any instructions on where to pitch tents facilities etc.. the field was water logged. The toilets were disgusting really dirty and no toilet roll. The single shower was poor and cold. Overall a really bad experience

From the manager: Im sorry you had a bad experience and I understand your complaints. A bunch of factors have piled up that have led to a tricky opening. I dont want to make excuses as I don't think it helps, but an extremely wet spring and my wife having a premature baby this week in the hospital have made things difficult. Though I understand this is not your concern or problem. I wish you could have called me during your stay and I could have worked to fix the problems you mentioned. As though I don't have a front reception this being a small business, I did have two people on call who could have helped. I would hope this is not the normal experience and will pick up in a few weeks with some sun. Anyway I apologise that you had a bad time and wish you the best. Thanks Angus

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked: Back to basics camp site. Pitches are generous and spaces between pitches also good. Firepits provided and honesty box for wood. Toilets were better than expected for wild camping as more used to compost type. Site itself was amazing overnight - stars visible and also owls / pheasants sounded like they were in abundance!

Disliked: Personally not a dislike but to be aware at this time of year that the path from the main car park to the pitches was boggy. You have to tread carefully and carry kit a bit of a way which we would normally do anyway for a wild campsite.

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked: Beautifully situated site, well spaced pitches, lots of wildlife.

Disliked: Given all the unseasonable rain, the site was pretty soggy in places. We had boots, so didn’t cause a major issue.

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked: Great communication with the campsite owner resulting in relaxed campsite with lots of space. Basic facilities but all that's needed to spend some time outside. Field is situated in a natural dip so despite forecast encountered limited wind. Straightforward walk across field to/from the nearest pub (1.5miles). Enjoyed watching variety of birds over the site.

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked: This place was really easy to find, called the number I received via text confirmation when I arrived and the gentleman came straight to me and showed me where the pitch site was, toilets, shower etc. Super friendly and welcoming! The site was dry and very spacious, loads of room to choose from. I was on a 3-day hike totalling 100 miles and so I pitched close to the toilets/shower! The shower itself was relatively basic, but there was enough water pressure and warmth to get clean comfortably. Would highly recommend if looking for a stopover or multi-night stay.

Disliked: The pain in my feet when I woke up!

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked: We loved this site. The views are beautiful, there's plenty of space, and the wildlife is all around. We stayed here as a base for visiting the Weald and Downland museum (which is about 45 mins away) and it was a really nice weekend. Our children enjoyed making friends with other children on the site and playing in the field. There was plenty of room for them to run around and play without disturbing other campers. It is also really dark at night, much darker than the skies where we live - great for star gazing :)

Local attractions

Folk who’ve invested in a National Trust membership can surely get their money’s worth out of this area: aim for 18th-century Uppark House (10 minutes’ drive), wander around Woolbeding Gardens (10 minutes) and admire the art collection at Petworth House (half an hour) – tipped to be one of the finest in the NT’s possession. (Or try Hinton Ampner, Slindon Estate, Winkworth Arboretum…) There’s a whole load more history to see down by the coast, too. If it’s maritime times gone by that interest you, head to Portsmouth to potter around the historic dockyard and mosey around the Mary Rose Museum (or, for something more modern, sail up the Emirates Spinnaker Tower to see the sea from 170 metres up). Weald & Downland Living Museum (20 minutes) is a fab place for a glimpse into real life from days of yore. If you’re simply planning to fill your break with lots of rural rambles, perhaps it’s a wise idea to lay in supplies for a restorative drink upon your return? Langham Brewery (20 minutes) is worth a visit for a tour of the steam-powered brewery, and there are local vinos to pick up at Trotton Estate (10 minutes) and Upperton Vineyards (20 minutes).
