  • Family-friendly Hampshire site in the South Downs National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Petersfield; half an hour from the south coast
  • On-site pizza restaurant, bar and café (varied opening hours and days)
A South Downs National Park setting with gorgeous views across valleys and farmland? Say no more: Hampshire's Cedar Valley has spacious pitches with all of the above, plus access to neat and tidy amenity cabins housing showers, toilets and sinks. The pitches are suitable for families or other groups: send the kids to the designated mown area to play football, fly kites or muck around. For downtime from the kids, adults can beeline to The Dell, the lively on-site pizza restaurant, bar and café (typically open on Friday to Sunday; opening hours and days vary throughout the year). Barbecues and campfires are permitted to allow you to live that proper outdoorsy lifestyle. West Meon and East Meon, both five minutes' drive away from the site, have small village shops should you need to pick up any last-minute supplies. Plus, when you need to clean up after your group barbecues or picnics, there is also a covered washing-up area provided on site. Thinking about where to go exploring? Cedar Valley is within half an hour's drive of the south coast and an hour and a half from London. It's surrounded by countryside with scenic walks and cycling routes (including the South Downs Way, for the more ambitious hikers among you), as well as several wild swimming spots and some very fine Hampshire pubs.

What customers say

Lovely spot with great views and walks, super for dogs. Clean facilities, hot water. Popular cafe "The Dell" serves good pizza. Generally peaceful, though can get busy and a bit noisy at weekends. Pitches are spacious and friendly vibe, but a few want more toilets/showers when packed. Some bits need a spruce-up.

Paddock unpowered grass campervan or tent site

Liked Nice location. The Dell is a fantastic bonus for cafe/pizza/bar etc.

Disliked The website states "all groups must book the Paddock campsite". We were a group of 3 families with young children so thought we had to book the Paddock, but it was totally inappropriate for us. There were 2x extremely large groups (probably 8-10 tents) who had loud music until 11pm every night over the bank holiday. The wardens were on site but showed no interest in enforcing the 9pm curfew. There were also lots of smaller groups of teenagers and young adults who made lots of noise until the early hours.

Possibly the Meadow would have been better, but in which case the website needs to be updated to be clear that young, quiet families who want peaceful evenings without music should stay there instead.

The facilities were clean but the site was very busy on the bank holiday weekend. Most of the toilets and showers are combined in the same cubicles which meant long queues at peak hours.

There was no oversight of the camping locations and one group (~ 4 tents) bizarrely camped in a line in front of the toilets, right on top of other groups and even blocking another person's van in. This meant everyone was forced to walk through their site and other sites to get to the toilets. The wardens should have told them to camp elsewhere given there was plenty of room at the bottom of the field.

Paddock unpowered grass campervan or tent site

Liked Lovely place, good walks to the pub, lovely 'Dell' bar.

Disliked We tried to order pizza in what we thought might be plenty of time (about 12 on the day for any time in the evening) but they were already sold out by then. Also something was broken so couldn't buy breakfast the following morning, this was a shame. The people next to us were a huge group with so many cars! Was a bit like being in a car park, again a bit of a shame.

Meadow unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site (no groups)

Liked Wonderfully maintained site in a quiet area. Facilities were clean and there were enough showers so there were no queues!
Beautiful area and, for all but one night, extremely quiet after 9pm.

Disliked Despite camping in the family field and not the group field, an extremely large group turned up. They were noisy until 2am and kept unlocking and locking their cars which caused the lights to flash and the horns to beep. There was no one supervising the site to address this but we did receive an apology from the site the following morning when we notified them of the disturbance. However, our last night was completely ruined and I would think twice about booking here with a young family again if the site allows large groups to camp and inconsiderately disturb others until 2am.

Liked Everything. The location, the facilities on site and the options for food at the Dell. The people were really friendly and checked on was very simple.

Disliked The ground was hard for our pegs, but this could be the exceptional dry spell we were having.

Meadow unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site (no groups)

Liked Loved the location. Surrounded by golden fields and undulating hills everywhere. It’s in an absolutely stunning area! Also a bargain at £15 per night.

Disliked My only gripe is lack of a rail/ bannister on the toilet block. Being disabled and having to use mobility aids, it was a real struggle to get up the 3 quite steep (for me) steps. Coming down was even more of a challenge! I’ve only become disabled over the last 2 years and it’s become quite an eye opener.

Having said that, the toilet/ shower block was very clean. The showers were powerful and lovely and hot!
I’ll still be coming back. There’s so much to explore!

Local attractions

Get out via two wheels: several decent bike tracks are on the estate itself or you can pedal off around the area's many lanes and bike routes. A good run is to Petersfield (15 minutes' drive) to stock up on armfuls of fresh produce at the Wednesday and Saturday markets. If trotting's more your thing, ask the Cedar Valley team about the pony rides available in the surrounding countryside: both experienced and amateur riders can take their pick from three-hour rides through first-class woodland, or around the area's cross-country course. If you prefer your equine animals at a speedy distance, the racecourse at Goodwood is about half an hour's drive away. More of a foot-based wanderer? The Cedar Valley team has mapped out many walks in the area so you can wander off to see where your feet might take you. The South Downs Way is close by: try the walk from Petersfield to Cocking, via Nursted Copse and Harting Down.
