  • Scenic 30-acre site in the south of the New Forest National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Mudeford and Highcliffe sandy beaches
  • Streams, woods and cycling tracks nearby; firepits on site
Combine years of experience, decades of enthusiasm and almost half a century of New Forest camping heritage and you get The Old Airfield, a site in one of the New Forest’s most striking areas. With plenty of space and fresh air, the site is in the south of the New Forest National Park, a short drive from sandy beaches and a few minutes' walk or cycle away from deep woodlands and streams to play in. Yes, a short walk from your base, there's access to miles and miles of uninterrupted walking and cycling trails. The site is bicycle-friendly, and in fact, they actively encourage guests to explore on two wheels (that's if you're able to get past the New Forest ponies and donkeys who sometimes congregate at the gate); bicycles can easily be hired and delivered to the site. The Old Airfield Campsite is 10 minutes' drive away from the sandy beaches of Mudeford and Highcliffe. It's also a convenient five-minute drive from Burley's many shops and cafés. For bigger days out on England's south coast, make your way to Bournemouth (30 minutes) or Poole (35 minutes), a gateway to the gorgeous Jurassic Coast. Stroll to the local pubs through ancient woodlands too. The Old Airfield Campsite’s setting is rather special in itself, set over 30 acres of well-drained forest land, with views over beech and oak trees. New Forest ponies and their foals will be keeping an eye on you from the surrounding heathland. But things weren't always this peaceful – during the 1940s, the site was used as an RAF airstrip, regularly sending out reconnaissance missions to continental Europe. Now the skies above the New Forest are full only of birds, and nature has well and truly reclaimed the land… Groups of families or friends are welcome on site; there's a grownups-only area on site.

What customers say

Spacious, organised site with friendly staff, great showers & location near forests/coast. Popular bar/food trucks. Facilities basic but clean. Some found ground hard to peg, limited water points. A few noted noise/busyness.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Amazing place liked the fact that there were different areas for families, adults and groups , loved the policy of quiet after 11 and that they do check everyone complies , staff very helpful , love the pizza and drinks options on site too

Disliked Think they could put some showers in the adult area even if it’s one or two as it’s a bit of a trek from adult only fields to family area to shower

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked A very family friendly and accessible camp site with lots of space. We really liked the site, and the Hub for coffee, pizza, beer etc.

We felt safe and loved the family feel to the site with lots of children riding bikes and playing.

Disliked Under the flight path so would sometimes be disturbed by plane noise.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Food trucks, coffee van, composting toilets, showers, easy going friendly staff, location, general vibe was excellent! different fields were good, a quiet field, Family field, etc.

Disliked the ground was set like concrete but that's not the fault of the management all the staff, more the extremely dry summer top tip: bring a cordless drill and a masonry bit to drill a hole for the pegs!

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're really pleased to hear you appreciated the huge space we have around us and our beautiful New Forest location — it's something our guests love.
I am sorry you didn't use our HOT WATER WASHING UP AREA! We also provide washing up bowls and fairy liquid, brushes, scourers and cloths. We have one main area for hot water washing up, and many other areas for washing up around the site with tables, drainers, washing up bowls and washing up liquid.
We have our great new Compost loo block ,as well as plenty of very clean and well maintained portaloos.
We genuinely value all feedback — both positive and constructive — as it helps us continue to evolve. We're sorry you missed our hot water washing up areas and we will make sure we show other guests when they arrive so they don't miss it!

Local attractions

Walk and cycle straight from the site; if you like, forget the car for the weekend, as there are miles of off-road tracks and quiet lanes in the surrounding area. For swimming and kayaking, make your way to Highcliffe beach (10 minutes' drive) or Mudeford beach (10 minutes). For slightly more peaceful activities, Highcliffe Castle (10 minutes) has a beach and tea rooms. Barton on Sea Golf Course (15 minutes) is there for the golfing keen beans. Otherwise, you might want to wander around the harbour in Mudeford (10 minutes), Christchurch Priory (10 minutes) or the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy (30 minutes). Paultons Park (30 minutes) is a theme park that will surely pick up the pace again – many of the rides are Peppa Pig themed, which might be a hit with the kids. If it’s watersports, zorbing and inflatable aqua parks they like, you’ll also hit the jackpot with a visit to the Lymington Sea Water Swimming Baths (25 minutes).
