Bell tent

Liked: It was perfect having the bell tent set up for arrival. Spacious for 2 adults and 3 kids. We had 5 airbeds and fitted well at night and we stacked one up in the day to give us half the tent back. Facilities close to the bell tents so ideal with young ones. Good size toilet and shower cubicles to share with young ones too.

Disliked: Although the camp road going through is very quiet, the bell tents are quite close to it down a steep bank, which you have to be wary of with smaller ones. Parking next to your tent is not an option, but you can be close enough. The campsite wasn’t busy so plenty of parking, but may be tricky if very busy.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: It was so quiet... had the place to ourselves pretty much and the steam trains chugging up and down was novel and smelt amazing. Toilets and showers were very good and the railway shop and petrol station close meant you could get any food drinks easliy. South facing aspect meant solar charger worked perfectly as no hook up and could park very close to tents due to where we pitched which we thought might have been a problem. Even a play park for the kids at the railway... and just so happened that the local reptile group were visiting at the station so our daughters 'cuddled' several snakes over the weekend... Aylresford is beatiful with a lovely riverside walk with ducks swans fish etc. and plenty of traditional shops, butchers, bakers, hardware etc.. a rare thing nowadays.

Disliked: Nothing... a lovely place to stay.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Very nice little camp site next to the Steam Trains, facilities clean and well maintained.

Disliked: Lights tripped in the bathrooms on the Saturday, the staff were good and offered us head torches and electrician was out following day so not going to mark them down for that.

Local attractions

Puff along on the Watercress Line or walk along the River Itchen to sightsee at Georgian New Alresford, or go in the other direction along the 10-mile route to its other terminus Alton, home of historic buildings, art gallery and the Curtis Museum. The ancient market town of Petersfield is about five miles to the east of Watercress: head here for markets, museums and scenic walks/pedals into the South Downs (Petersfield is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is in the South Downs National Park and on the South Downs Way). Winchester and its museum and castle is about 10 miles away: if the kids aren’t suitably awed by the 900-year-old cathedral (tsk), take them to Marwell Wildlife at Owslebury near the city to marvel at the 1,200 or so-strong menagerie of animals from all over the world, or to the simply super INTECH Science Centre and Planetarium on Winchester’s Morn Hill.
