  • Luxury shepherd’s hut near Finchingfield in north Essex countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive to Saffron Walden or Audley End House and Gardens
  • Kitchenette, woodburner and hot tub; pubs five minutes’ drive
Time to get away from it all? With lots of luxurious touches thrown in? Hidden away in north Essex countryside, Foster’s Meadow Glamping has a thoroughly rural setting – with accommodation in an oh-so-swish, wooden shepherd’s hut, sitting in a small glade next to a brook and with peaceful views over a flower meadow to the countryside beyond. It is private and secluded, just ideal for loved-up couples looking for a romantic break, without any modern-day trappings like TVs and wifi. Luckily, there are plenty of modern-day trappings of the convenient kind, all designed to make your life on site easy and relaxed. Inside the hut all is cosy, with a woodburner to brighten up chillier days, and a natty little kitchenette with everything you need to prepare simple meals, a seating area and comfy double bed. Outside on the private decking, you can laze away warm days, cook on the barbecue or fire up the pizza oven. And the icing on the cake? Exclusive use of the woodfired hot tub for romantic nights spent watching the stars.

Local attractions

There’s no real reason to ever stray from this secluded little spot, but if the mood takes you, there are walks directly from the camping meadow, and many more in the area. You can also fish for carp at Hilton Valley Carp Fishery (15 minutes’ drive) and sample British wines at a brace of local vineyards. Architecture fans, you’re in pole position for exploring some of Essex’s prettiest towns and villages. First stop might be Finchingfield (five minutes’ drive) for a stroll to the duck pond on the village green, and a choice of several pubs and cosy tearooms. Ancient Saffron Walden (half an hour) has higgledy-piggledy, brightly painted Georgian-era houses, and Thaxted (15 minutes) is known for its striking medieval centre with a half-timbered guildhall. Other historic treasures in the area include the formal plantings and lavish apartments at stately Audley End House and Gardens, and the heritage buildings at Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village (both half an hour).
