Kids welcome

  • Dog-friendly campsite in the grounds of a popular farm park
  • Between Billericay and Basildon; easily accessible by public transport
  • Restaurant, tea rooms, farm shop and kids' attractions
Spread across a spacious setting in the Essex countryside, Barleylands is a fab farm campsite with plenty of room for families to relax (along with their dogs if they're coming along for a country break). The flat grass fields at this working farm have basic facilities including hot showers and well-maintained toilet blocks and are a few hundred yards from a popular farm park where there are all sorts of animals, shops and food options to explore. Guests staying the night at Barleylands also qualify for a special stay-and-play discount, making it even easier to access its walk-through aviary, tractor rides, bird of prey displays and indoor and outdoor playgrounds. (The park is particularly recommended for kids between the ages of three and 10.) Also close by is the Barleylands’ craft village (open from Tuesday to Sunday), where there are over 30 different studios to explore. And, as it's surrounded by open countryside, Barleylands has great access to local footpaths and rights of way. Other outdoor leisure options in the area include a golf course and an equestrian centre, both of which are under a mile away. Barleylands is also easily accessible by public transport: regular local bus services stop opposite the park and can take you into either Billericay (journey time 15 minutes) or Basildon (20 minutes), where there are shops, cinemas, leisure centres and mainline railway stations. Please note that this is a working farm so there may be some noise from farm machinery at times.

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: The site is large and clean with good facilities. The toilets are basic but cleaned regularly so no faults really. Will be coming back as not far from us.

Disliked: Toilets could do with updating. Grandchildren came for the farm went in at 3 but lot of things closed including tractor ride but nobody told us after taking our money. Other than that it was fine

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: Very easy to find and pitch up, bus service to Billericay and Basildon for interconnecting transport easy to use, and just outside of Barleylands. Showers in the shower block easy to use, and lovely and warm,

Disliked: the only downside was perhaps a couple more toilets would be useful, as there were only 2 next to the shower block and queuing was inevitable,

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Barleylands was a lovely clean site. The farm park there and craft village are both really nice also. We didnt try the football golf but definitely will try it next time we go.

Disliked: Only thing i'd change is maybe a little play area on the actual campsite as there is only a park in the farm park so if you dont pay for entry to the farm park you cant access it.

Liked: Pitch was flat. The barleylands site was huge and offered different activities throughout the day.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Flat site, campers were very quiet and respectful of each other

Disliked: No one to greet you on arrival, cameras watching u like big brother. Combination doors to get access to toilets, no hot water for washing up, only saw 1 team of cleaners all weekend and that was on the bh mon as we were packing up. washing up facilities were dirty, food in plug even though a sign says put food remnants in bin, no bin liner on frame to use the whole weekend, no dog walking apart from tiny field which took 5 mins. Spoilt the weekend as first time on this site but won't return.

Local attractions

Bounce down to Basildon (10 minutes’ drive), where the town centre has cinemas, a shopping centre and plenty of restaurants and pubs where you can spend evenings away from base. For more urban explores, you’ll be about an hour by car or train from central London, making Barleylands a top option for weekends away from the capital or a mix of rural and city days out. Getting to the seaside is also easily arranged here, as Barleylands is 20 minutes from Thorney Bay beach, a family-friendly spot on Canvey Island with great views over the Thames Estuary. Southend (30 minutes) is also an option for traditional days by the beach, with amusements and a pier to sweeten the deal. For more things to do, take the family off to Adventure Island theme park (30 minutes), Diggerland Kent (40 minutes) or, for quieter times, try stately homes like Hylands House (25 minutes) and Boreham House (25 minutes), both of which have a range of gardens and pretty parklands to explore.
