Plenty of space

  • Relaxed and friendly rural site five minutes' drive from Rye
  • A 15-minute drive from the beach at Camber Sands
  • Pub five minutes' walk away and bus to Rye just outside the site
Coast, country, castles, campfires – the cracking combo that’s likely to send you haring off (with hounds if you’ve got some that need a holiday) to Hare and Hounds Campsite, a relaxed and friendly place in the highly scenic surrounds of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. What a fab location this is… there’s plenty of space around the two and a half acres to relax or run about (depending on your preference), and it’s a mere five minutes’ trot from a country pub that’ll welcome you all in (kids and dogs included) for a meal or a couple of pints (this last not for the kids and dogs…). More pubs, restaurants and shops are five minutes’ drive away in Rye; save yourself the hassle of parking by boarding the bus directly outside the site. Filling many a day is an easy task around these parts: Camber Sands is 15 minutes' drive away for beach antics, and you can swot up on all kinds of history with trips to Bodiam Castle, Rye Castle and Hastings, all within half an hour. This is a place that thrives on plenty of peaceful slumbers, so if you’ve got party times in mind you’ll need to look elsewhere. Cosy evenings round barbecues are enthusiastically embraced, however. The friendly folks on site will loan you a firepit stacked with all the necessary accoutrements for a small extra charge - they don't permit guests to bring their own firepits. The refurbished amenities include six spankingly clean toilets and four similarly spick-and-span showers.

Liked: I was greeted by the owner on arrival. Extremely helpful and friendly. Walked me to my pitch. Great site and lots of space this time of the year. I have a very well behaved dog who was allowed to be off the lead which was great. Faculties were very very good.

Disliked: It was a great site but I was out of season. Pitches were small so I would not have liked to be there high season. That would be my only concern.

Liked: nice clean tidy site, handy location for bus or walk to Rye. friendly efficient welcome.

Disliked: some road noise, but not intrusive. we couldn't use the gray waste disposal point in its location as our van doesnt have a removable tank, and our bucket had decided to give up the ghost.

Powered grass motorhome site

Liked: This is a lovely campsite and the first we have stayed in with our new camper van. We enjoyed a friendly and helpful welcome, good range of facilities, including piping hot water, and cleanliness. We came for 4 nights in the 2nd week of September, once the schools had gone back, so it was very quiet and meant that we had good access to all facilities. Within walking distance of Rye (across the fields, so a nice walk and the town is lovely and steeped in history), bus stop right outside and 5 minutes to the nearest pub.

Disliked: We wondered if there would be a queue for the showers in high season, as there were only 4 showers in total, 1 dedicated for men, another for women plus 2 mixed. A small thing, but 2 of the showers were quite compact, so not much room for manoeuvre, and the light in the men's loo by the washing up area went off a bit too quickly - easily fixed. Take care turning out of the campsite onto the road outside, as it's on a bend and it's a 50 mph limit there.

Unpowered grass tent site (two person)

Liked: There's so much to like about this campsite. Generally just really well run, the little touches and attention to details make it a really lovely campsite. Toilets are great, clean and stocked well. Washing up area has bowls and washing up liquid if you forget yours. Showers are hot. And handy information about the local area of things to do, including a walk in to Rye (takes less than an hour).

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

Love long walks or bike rides? Site staff will happily point you towards plenty of places to get those legs going – top picks include the family trails and dedicated mountain bike trails at Bedgebury Forest (half an hour’s drive), gentle strolls around seafront Romney Marsh (25 minutes) and trips to Bewl Water (35 minutes) for walking, cycling, fishing and rowing on the lake. Want more watersports? Spectacular Camber Sands beach (15 minutes’ drive) is a popular place to have a crack at kitesurfing, while the calmer waters around Rye are more suited to windsurfing and paddleboarding. If you’d rather stay dry, Rye’s a fab place for a laidback day bimbling around the castle, museums and antique shops. Other landlubbing days out include the moated medieval Bodiam Castle (20 minutes’ drive), rides on the Northiam Steam Railway (10 minutes) and meeting all sorts of farm animals, birds of prey and butterflies at the Rare Breeds Centre (20 minutes), where you’re highly encouraged to time your visit to coincide with pig racing time.
