  • Wild pop-up site in the High Weald National Landscape
  • Seven acres of scenic woodland half an hour's drive from Hastings
  • Half an hour’s walk from Robertsbridge village shops and pub
Like your holidays on the wild side? Then you should very much like the thought of waking up to seven acres of stunning fields and woodland at Column Wood… Just outside of the historic village of Robertsbridge in East Sussex, it’s within half an hour’s walk of a selection of shops and a pub, as well as the historic Rother Valley Railway, and yet it feels oh-so remote. As a pop-up site, there are just a few communal facilities including a composting loo and an off-grid shower. There is no electricity on site, and everyone must be on board with the leave-no-trace policy. There’s one pub in Robertsbridge within walking distance, but there are plenty more pubs a short drive away if you like to vary your pint-sipping and crisp-snacking settings. One of these is in Salehurst, five minutes’ drive away from the site. A day at the seaside can easily be arranged from Column Wood too, with historic Hastings and Bexhill beach just half an hour’s drive away. Being based in the High Weald National Landscape also means that hikes are a short drive away, such as the Bewl Water loop (20 minutes’ drive away) and the High Weald Landscape Trail.

Local attractions

There are plenty of places in and around the High Weald where it’s easy to imagine yourself in the olden days. First up is Bodiam Castle (15 minutes’ drive), a 14th-century moated castle built by a knight of Edward III for the Hundred Years’ War. Around the castle you can spot steep towers, murder holes and a medieval bread oven. For place number two, make your way to the National Trust’s Bateman's (10 minutes) to see the 17th-century home of Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book. Herstmonceux Castle (25 minutes) is another nice place to stroll around and think about how things used to be; the 300-acre estate has a 15th-century brick castle. In Hastings (half an hour), take a stroll around the old town and the East Hill Lift to Hastings Country Park for views of Beachy Head. The West Hill Lift will take you to the ruined Hastings Castle. Hastings Pier and seaside amusements are also along the seafront of this splendid town.
