Peaceful grass pitches

  • Peaceful back-to-basics rural site in the village of Telscombe
  • Just off the South Downs Way and 30 minutes' walk to the beach
  • Organic meat and free-range eggs available to buy from the farm
‘The Downs… too much for one pair of eyes, enough to float a whole population in happiness, if only they would look.’ Thus sighed author (and former local resident) Virginia Woolf in her diary back in 1937. Little has changed around here in the intervening years – if you’d like to look for yourself, settle in at Stud Farm, just outside Telscombe in the South Downs National Park. And what views they are from here – a patchwork of woods and farmland tumbling down to the south coast. There aren’t any marked pitches so just pick your spot and commence the fine activity of staring out to sea. Campfires directly on the ground aren’t permitted but you can hire a firepit or barbecue for warmth and eats. Crank your evening’s gawping up a notch or two with an alfresco feast direct from the farm, which can supply tasty treats for your grill, including home-reared pork and lamb. Marshmallows (not home-reared but still essential firepit fodder) are available for dessert. While you’re there, pick up one of their breakfast hampers so you can get your morning off to a champion start with bangers and free-range eggs. Facilities are kept basic here to maintain the site’s peaceful vibe – you’ll have access to toilets, a couple of showers and drinking water. If you’d like to immerse yourself in water it’s a half-hour stroll down to the nearest beach, where you can launch yourself into the sea for a refreshing dip.

What customers say

Peaceful spot with epic 360 views of Downs and sea. Campers rave about spacious sites, super-clean facilities, and friendly staff. Loads of walks from the site, plus it’s close to attractions. Basic facilities and wind noted by a few, but the amazing scenery and value win out.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked The downs. The hot showers. The basic but excellent facilities. The walk straight out the campsite down to the sea. The silence at night. Stud Farm is a stunner!

Disliked Ground a tad tough to camp on after a hot dry summer, but that couldn’t be helped.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked Amazing views, staff and facilities. The owner would often patrol and meet new comers and check in on campers to make sure everyone was happy. Large pitches and great value for money. Also very easy to find with great walking paths, shops and beaches close by

Liked The view was lovely
Nice quiet site
Facilities clean

Disliked Hearing the lady telling another camper that the illegal immigrants should be shot on the boats
Being told in advance there were no sheep in surrounding fields due to having 2 dogs with me, to arriving and finding sheep on 3 sides of the campsite (and 4th side on the other side of the road)

From the manager: We take the allegations you have made about our staff extremely seriously. All of our staff have attended equality and diversity training and this matter will be thoroughly investigated and any misconduct found will be addressed accordingly. We have never before had any sort of allegation like this made against any staff in our employment this year of any other year. As you can see from the feedback we get our customer service is very important to us and this is reflected in the comments made by our customers.
Regarding the matter of the sheep in the adjacent fields. We are a campsite based on a sheep farm and therefore there are always sheep in adjacent fields. All of our staff are completely aware of this. Our website also states we are based on a mixed farm with sheep and there are many pictures of sheep in and around the campsite. 80% of our customers bring dogs to our campsite and providing they are kept under control they are very welcome.

From the manager: thank you for your feedback, it is valuable to us.
the scenery is great with the view of the Downs and the Sea from this site.
we have checked the doors and they do lock, if you try to open the door after locking then you would find that they don't open, sorry that the shower light didn't work for you.
we have also checked the light, it does work, the problem is that some people leave the light on after a shower and as they are solar powered they run down and don't recharge in darkness, however we will look into this and see if we can improve this, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked Staff very friendly, cared about the guests and cleanliness of the site. Breakfast food was excellent.

Disliked Large groups on some camping pitches

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: thank you for your feedback which is valuable to us.
we do what we can for our customers, we have actually sampled the products and they are excellent quality at competitive prices.
we actually don't accept large groups because we do value that our customers appreciate the peacefulness of the site.
unfortunately some large groups do book their pitches separately under different names as in normal small booking only to get together after they have arrived, which is not possible to control. however we do monitor the site to do security checks and make sure there is no music on after 9pm which is a site rule.
many thanks

Disliked No wifi

From the manager: thank you for your feedback.
there are great views of the Downs and the Sea from this site, with walks and places to visit, as well as only 15 minutes away from Newhaven ferry port.
unfortunately there is no electricity on this site, so not able to provide wifi, however you can actually get 5G on your phone from this hilltop depending on your phone provider, so most people connect their laptop to their phone hotspot.
many thanks

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked The location, the views, the hosts, sunrises and sunsets. The adventure to get here! The facilities are a little more basic than some, but this is a hilltop rural campsite-however, everything you need is here, drinking water, showers, toilets and disposal. The mornings and evenings, sun rolling across the hills and sea make this place really special. The hosts are charismatic and energetic and really helpful, answering questions etc. There are great walks and rides straight out of the gate.

Disliked I don’t dislike this, but be aware that the location is in the elements. My first night was in a hurricane. It was actually dramatic and amazing to watch it across the channel:-)

From the manager: thank you for your feedback.
we do try to promote this site as a peaceful stay but we do occasionally get the odd ones that that don't respect others, we do have a No Music policy after 9pm which we monitor along with the security of the site.
we have improved the toilet block with the toilet flushes on a separate system, and we are looking to improve them further, any thoughts and ideas are welcome, good or bad, as we do want to improve the site as much as possible.
please do feel free to voice your opinions an any subject about the site.

Local attractions

To see more of those views, get your boots on and head out onto the South Downs Way, which passes very close by. Hardy souls can tackle the route’s full 100-mile length, while casual ramblers can choose a shorter section. A popular attraction along the route is the chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington, a tall lad indeed at 72 metres. It’s a four-hour walk to see him, or you could drive there in around half an hour. Heading south, a 15-minute walk takes you down to the coast path, where you can continue your stroll to the stretch of shingle at Saltdean. The pier, beach and historic buildings of Brighton are around a half-hour drive away. If you’re feeling particularly active you can walk there in around two hours and then hire a kayak or paddleboard to take to the sea. If you’d like to see the place that inspired Virginia Woolf to wax lyrical about the area, visit her country retreat, Monk’s House, an hour’s walk from the site. There are family-friendly attractions galore around here, too – it'll take you around half an hour to drive to the steam-powered Bluebell Railway, or to Drusillas Park.
