  • Small, quiet Lancashire campsite in the north of the Forest of Bowland
  • Lancaster and Morecambe both 20 minutes' drive away
  • Part of a 180-acre farm with retired racehorses living on site
Where do racehorses go when they retire from competition? Well, some of the lucky ones end up here at Whinney Hill Farm, in Lancashire’s Lune Valley and surrounded by the fabulous scenery of the Forest of Bowland National Landscape. And now you can join them too, for a relaxing break in this lovely rural location. This 180-acre site is home to The British Thoroughbred Retraining Centre, a charity that cares for and rehomes retired racehorses. You’ll probably spot some of the residents (currently numbering around 30) as you pass through the site, but there’s also the chance to meet them properly on a visit while you’re here (you’ll just need to organise this in advance by contacting the site owners once you’ve booked your stay). Whether you’re into horses or not, this farm makes a great base for days spent exploring the Forest of Bowland – and that’s not the only natural area you’ll have at hand, because both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks are within a half-hour drive too. And you can also plan seaside days too, because the coast is only about 20 minutes’ drive away… This farm site has something of a wild camping vibe – it’s got no electricity, but guests do have access to a washing-up area (fittingly in a converted horse trailer), two compost toilets and two gas-powered showers. There’s also a communal firepit area where you can keep warm by night while looking up into the starry skies.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Peaceful, tranquil site in quiet location with lovely view.

Disliked: No cars allowed on site so you have to transport all your gear in a wheelbarrow to your pitch, then back to your car at end of stay. For a mature couple in our late 60's on a very hot day, this proved to be extremely hard work. A group of much younger and fitter people staying on the site commented to us that they also found it difficult to transport all the gear they had.

From the manager: I’m genuinely sorry and disappointed to hear that transporting your gear to your pitch was such hard work, especially in the heat. We completely understand that taking a car onto the campsite would be much easier and it is something we have tried in the past.
The no-car rule was introduced from the middle of last year after a number of guests got stuck trying to drive onto the field — even during dry spells. Some areas of the ground remain soft and unpredictable, and we’ve found that restricting vehicles is the best way to prevent damage, keep guests safe, and protect the land. As a greener camping club site, we also try to maintain the natural setting with as little disruption to the environment and local wildlife as possible.
The campsite is run solely by myself and Harriet, alongside our full-time roles at the charity, so unfortunately we’re not able to be on-site at all times. That said, whenever we are around — which is quite often — we’re always more than happy to help guests move their things if they ask us. We completely understand that it can be physically demanding, especially in hot weather. Harriet and I were on-site during your arrival and would have been glad to help, if we had known you were struggling.
All proceeds from the campsite go directly toward our work rescuing and rehabilitating vulnerable ex-racehorses — something that has become even more essential due to reduced funding in recent years. While I’m truly sorry that this part of your stay fell short, I want to thank you sincerely for supporting our mission just by staying with us :)
Even though you mentioned you won’t be returning, please know that if you ever reconsider, we’d be more than happy to help with getting your things to and from your pitch to make things easier for you both. In light of your review I will try to make it clearer on our page that cars are no permitted on the site. Thank you again for your feedback.
Many Thanks

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Great site. All staff are friendly and approachable. I was a solo female with two teenagers and one 3yr old and They helped us with our camping gear. The field wasn't suitable to bring the car to the pitch so they put everything on the trailer and took it to the pitch. And helped us off site in the same way. Site was very clean and tidy. The toilets where emptied and cleaned in the mornings. Nice, clean warm showers. Overall i was very impressed with the site

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: We had a really nice two nights here. The toilets, kitchen area and showers were lovely and clean. The site was so peaceful at night time too which was great. It is on a steep hill so you need to get there at 3 so you can pitch at the top of the hill to avoid being an a steep slant! No complaints at all. We will definitely be returning, it's exactly what we wanted

Disliked: No dislikes, although if we'd had to camp on the slant of the hill, it wouldn't have been possible. Apart from that, all good!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Trisha, thank you for your review, we are glad you enjoyed your stay and would visit us again, we look forward to welcoming you to WHF again :) Just to note, the steep part of the field is not part of the campsite, it is only the top half of the field. See you soon! WHF x

Serenity bell tent

Liked: The warm welcome, tent, cleanliness and facilities, especially the hot showers. And the fact that the money from the Glamping help's to support the Farms amazing work looking after retired race horses. No WiFi, but there was a solid 4G.
