  • On a working farm between the Forest of Bowland and Yorkshire Dales
  • Close to the Pennine Way; 20 minutes' drive to Skipton
  • Three pubs within walking distance; easy access from the M65
Planning a walk or few as part of your break? Maybe in the Yorkshire Dales or the Forest of Bowland… or on the Pennine Way… and not forgetting other top spots like Pendle Hill and Gisburn Forest… If you reckon that sounds like a pretty enticing collection of places to explore, the place to stay is Shay Gate Farm, just outside Laneshawbridge on the border between Lancashire and Yorkshire. This well-placed spot is about half an hour’s drive from the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland, five minutes from the Pennine Way and within easy reach of several other excellent walking/biking areas. Getting in, out and all around should be pretty easy too – Colne is about two and a half miles away, and the M65 about four miles. The setup on site is a family-friendly one, with lots of space for the kids to run about and burn off energy. Facilities include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a communal fridge, and you’re allowed to bring along a barbecue to cook your meals if you like (it’s a 20-minute drive to Skipton’s market to stock up on local produce for the grill). There are, however, three country pubs within walking distance if you’d rather someone else cooked you a meal.

What customers say

Great views & chilled vibe, staff super helpful. Quirky horse box showers & clean loos praised. Spacious, free-choice pitches, though some are sloped. Basic facilities fine for most. Noise from other campers can be an issue on busy weekends.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Very welcoming and friendly staff, absolutely gorgeous views and clean and tidy facilities. During our stay there was a pizza maker on site for two of the days as well as an ice cream van that did the rounds too which was a nice bonus! There was a wide range of campers staying at the site, from car campers, roof top tents, vans, motorhomes and ground tents, so it’s a site suitable for everyone! Lots of farmyard animals in the neighbouring fields, so you can go and give the cows a stroke and on an evening we could sit and watch the young cows in a field on a hill opposite running around which was very entertaining :)

Disliked We managed to get a flat pitch but a lot of the site is on a hill, which might be a problem for some. There are only four toilets so during busy parts of the day there was a queue to use them, however they were cleaned numerous times a day by the owner.

Liked The site is lovely, really good value for money, good check in and check out times and a stunning location!
We loved being able to pick our own spot and how much space there is on the fields!
Our boys had loads of space to play, explore and being able to visit the cows!
The facilities are cleaned regularly, the horse box showers are a fab touch, and the wood for fires is a good price!
We'll definitely come back again!

Disliked Our only issue was our neighbours, who kept us awake until 1/2 in the morning playing their music loud and singing. The next morning they obviously had sore heads and couldn't be bothered to keep an eye on their dog, who got out and ran around the field, jumping up at our boys and came into our area, tried to take our food and went to toilet on our windbreaks. We couldn't wake them, so had to contact staff (who were amazing and sorted the problem!) It's just a shame some people don't respect your rules or other people on their breaks aswell!

Liked The pitch itself was great with great views and nice soft ground , clean and tidy, showers, toilets and washing up facilities were at a reasonable but good standard, a few pubs that were walking distance and generally a good site. With the added extra of firepit hire at £15, that incudes a bag of wood .

Disliked Not much to do for kids, possibly a park of some sort would be great 👍

Local attractions

Where to take your walking boots first? Local strolls might take you out onto the Pendle Way (which you can access via a network of footpaths leading from the farm), to pick up the Pennine Way (five minutes’ drive) or to take in different rural views from the ‘Atom’ artwork in Wycoller Country Park (10 minutes). Not worn your legs out yet? Great - there’s plenty more to explore. Perhaps a climb of mystical Pendle Hill, a woodland walk in the Forest of Bowland or an outing to the Yorkshire Dales National Park? All are about half an hour away by car. Should you reach a point at which you need a sit down, a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway (25 minutes’ drive) is a good option, as it means you’ll still be able to survey the scenery at a more leisurely pace. A stroll around Skipton (20 minutes) might also be on the cards, taking in the priory and castle as you go.
