  • Friendly site on a working hill farm in the Howgill Fells
  • A five-minute drive to Tebay; 20 minutes to Kendal or Sedbergh
  • On the banks of the River Lune, with easy access from the M6
Heartwood Campsite is a lovely little spot in the Howgill Fells area of Cumbria, just between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District national parks. It’s part of a typical hill farm so you’ll probably spot the flock of Swaledale and Rough Fell sheep upon arrival (no doubt munching happily on the green grass, not even noticing the stunning views surrounding them…). Also resident here are cattle (who are more than happy to have a friendly scratch from visitors) and free-range chickens. Meat for summer barbecues and eggs for a top alfresco breakfast can be picked up on site for a real taste of your surroundings. The setup here is a simple one – the spacious pitches have portable toilets and drinking water, along with daily rubbish collection. Dogs and kids are welcome, and you’re also allowed to have campfires (an essential part of the experience, say the owners) as long as you clear up afterwards. This is a location that’s both scenic and handily located – there are splendid views all around, including along the River Lune, which runs past the site. It’s a five-minute drive to the M6 and the village of Tebay, famed for its excellent farm shop. Naturally, a location between two national parks means that there’s tons to do nearby, including adventure sports, boat hire, walks, villages to potter around and sights to see. Don’t know where to start? Check out the handy noticeboard on site or have a chat with the owners – they’re always happy to hand out local recommendations.

Liked: The only section you don't have is travelling with Father or mother and child so I picked Family and young children. This was mine and Astons first ever camping night and it's hard to say anything negative 🙏 The service was outstanding if not a bit too trustworthy! David was above and beyond any service I've had in expensive hotels and even though an Arsenal fan he knew about football, which I didn't expect from a farmer who works silly hours a day 🤣 The Site was perfect for us, cosy and relaxing with views that made us feel in the heart of the Lune, the River was amazing and we fully sat in it for a good 20 mins, as cold as it was I know the health benefits and Aston joined in, and the food from the local farm was the best chicken I've ever cooked so all in all I'll give it a 9.9/10. Minus .1 for the 3 times I had to reverse down the road for 2 cars the tractors 😛 All part of the fun but nothing is perfect so 9.9 it is. We will be back 99.9%...because nothing in life is guaranteed 💜💙 UTV.

Liked: The simplicity of the site and much more quiet than the nearby Lake District. The river was lovely.

Disliked: The grass a little bit too long for children to play. A little expensive at £25 per night with minimal facilities.

Liked: It’s amazing view, the river is stunning and the location is quite. On our first day we were lucky to have meet a pony name Lucky, ended was lucky day for the girls! Big thank you to Lucky’s owner who stop and let the girl’s pet Lucky. Apart from a breathtaking view, on our second day we saw a steam train🚂 passing by and the girls were so excited.

Disliked: The downside of it is that no shower facilities but we are aware of this and we brought our own camping shower.

Liked: Very picturesque and lovely location with stream / river nearby. Very chilled place and no rush on the morning you are leaving to be out and away, which is nice.

Disliked: There is a main Trainline nearby, which for some might be a distraction. Didn’t bother us though but we are heavy sleepers. Ear plugs do the job at taking away noise anyway.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: The area was good nice peaceful and quiet. There was a river passing by next to our pitch which was handy for wash up shower and just to sit and relax next to it. There wasn’t any restrictions as long as you behave sensible which was the key point because you have born fire or bbq all night no problem but other camp sites they have restrictions. All over was good the only draw back this site have is toilets and showers. They have portaloo toilets but not clean and no showers so if they add or maintain that then this site is perfect.

Disliked: They haven’t got good toilets only portaloo ones but they don’t clean them and no showers at all these 2 draw back could put someone off to choose this site but they might not come back again

Liked: The river and landscapes are perfect and Kendal is only 20 minutes away for anything you may need. The farmer is helpful and welcoming. Fresh eggs and chicken available upon request. Logs for campfires also available. Please don’t come here expecting luxury. It is a field with beautiful views. There is portaloos to use. River is on the site and excellent for swimming. Just a calming beautiful space to really experience the great outdoors. We can’t wait to return.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Good open field with more than enough space between pitches for people to set up as they wish. Breathtaking views 360 degrees around the valley with several peaks in the near area for walks. The chap who ran the site checked on new arrivals a few times a day and went around each morning with firewood and taking orders for fresh chicken that evening. Swimmable river running past the camp which people have a dip in.

Disliked: Toilets would be the only thing to mention but they are kept as clean as possible so no real negatives at all
