Kez's Campsite: Ancient woodland with sunny backdrop

General

  • Peaceful field site on a family farm with access to tennis court
  • Around 20 minutes’ drive to Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale and Morecambe
  • Dog-friendly site between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District

Finding it tricky to decide between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District? Weighing up your options between countryside or seaside? Split the difference and choose a stay at Kez’s Campsite, a back-to-basics site on a peaceful farm in South Cumbria.

From your pitch surrounded by green fields edged by traditional dry-stone walls and ancient woodland, it’s 20 minutes’ drive north to Kendal – the gateway to the Lake District – and the same distance east for Kirkby Lonsdale and the expanse of the Yorkshire Dales beyond. You can get to see the sea at Morecambe Bay in around 20 minutes too.

The site is run as a friendly family affair. Kez or other family members meet guests and will be on hand to help you settle in. Dogs are equally welcome and there’s plenty of space to let them have a run around. You can park up right next to your pitch and it’s fine to set up your raised firepits and barbecues to get some campfire cooking on the go.

Pick up local produce at the butcher in the village of Burton-in-Kendal, three minutes’ drive or a 20-minute walk away. Or if you fancy letting someone else do all the hard work, there’s a pub in Burton too and another in Holme, a five-minute drive or half hour’s walk. Both villages also have post offices and general stores should you need them. One night a week, a local pizza van company drops in at the site, which should make sorting dinner even easier.

Please note

The grocery shop is open between 05/07 and 15/08.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 8 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

An antidote to fussy over-manicured campsites07/19/2021

A refreshing change to over-manicured campsites with gravel pitches and grass mown to within a millimetre of its life. Kez’s Campsite is essentially a field you can camp in, with cows and sheep just the other side of the dry stone wall. Nice and handy for the M6, so only just an hour away from Manchester.

There are two festival-type toilets at the far end, a water tap on the right just as you go in, and a warm welcome from Kez when you arrive. Minimal but sensible rules. Quiet time is between 1030 and 0730, dogs must be kept on a lead on site, and fires and barbecues allowed provided they’re kept off the ground.

The sunsets were lovely, and what we liked most of all was the amount of space - it’s a big field and we were a long way from anybody. And the fact that the grass is a natural length for a field, rather than a manicured lawn.

No showers - which to be honest we could have done with on one of the hottest days of the year - but we knew that when we booked. If you’ve got a camping shower, bring it!

But there is a village shop 20 minutes walk away, and a lovely farm shop and cafe six minutes drive away. And there’s a Booths and an Aldi in Carnforth.

We went for a lovely walk up on Farleton Knott. Great views up there. Hutton Roof Crags is also an option. There’s a bit of roadside parking up that way if you want to cut a mile each way off you walk.

I did read somewhere that there’s the possibility of playing tennis, but we didn’t look into it. Maybe next time.

    Disliked:

There’s no difference between what you get if you’re in a camper van and what you get if you’re camping in a tent - so why charge £25 a night for a van, compared to only £15 for a tent? We take up less space in the field than a car parked next to a tent.

We also have two dogs, so that bumped what could have been a very reasonable £15 a night to £30, which for the level of amenities provided is a little on the steep side. But we’ll be back, nevertheless.

Also not keen on the two women with a barky dog that they let out around 7am, and did nothing to shut it up… but that’s not the campsite’s fault and hopefully they won’t be there next time.

From the manager...

Hi Drew,

Thank you for your kind review. We have had lots of discussion about the pricing and will be looking to change it next year. I apologise for the barking dog, but as you said it shouldn’t be there next time.

Hope to see you again.

Very spacious camp site with a beautiful surrounding area for walking and venturing to the local villages etc. Beautiful sun trap, perfect for family activities like football etc.

    Disliked:

I can only make a few comments on the site which I think would be good additions. I’d try and get the grass cut more often as when it’s damp your feet do get quite soaked. Also maybe add another tap with maybe a basin so you can have a face wash, I understand drainage may be an issue so maybe just leave a sign to not rinse soap and detergents to prevent soaking into the ground. Other than that it’s a great little spot for camping.

From the manager...

Hi,

I have taken your comment about the long grass into consideration and have cut the grass. The reason the grass was quite long as I needed to let the grass reach a certain length before topping. I am about to get onto making a sign suggesting not to rinse soap and detergents around the tap area. What a brilliant idea that had slipped my mind.

Thank you for your kind review and hope to see you again.
