  • Quiet site on the outskirts of the Lake District National Park
  • Right on the Cumbria Way at the edge of a forest and Caldbeck village
  • Carlisle, Penrith and Keswick all within 35 minutes’ drive
On the edge of the northern fells in the Lake District National Park, skirting a handily placed village and sitting on the Cumbria Way, it’s fair to say Caldbeck Camping is in an excellent location. In fact, this site makes a rather ace base for explores whether you’re planning on surveying the sights from a car or tackling hilly terrain on two feet. But back to the local area first: the park’s on the edges of Caldbeck, a settlement with a small shop and a post office as well as a pub and two cafés, and is also five minutes’ drive to Hesket Newmarket’s Cumbrian ale brewery. After a bit of harder liquor? If you don’t mind travelling for 35 minutes in the car you can soon be at the Lakes Distillery for tours and tastings. Manage to keep the booze to a minimum and walks can be had on the Cumbria Way straight from site, eventually leading to the famed Lake District towns of Coniston (an hour and 15-minute drive or a rather long wander...) and Keswick (35 minutes’ drive). Of course, you can pick and choose the parts of the path you want to ply, scaling the peaks of the Langdale and Borrowdale valleys for views over the lush landscape. Guests who’d rather roam closer to home, meanwhile, can set off into the forest straight from the site to have a leafy stroll, pick a streamside spot for some fishing or stick about by their pitch to set up for a relaxed evening by the barbecue or campfire. As this is a small site, facilities are kept to a minimum but guests have access to toilets, a shower, a washbasin and a recycling area.

What customers say

A tidy, tranquil spot by the river with a helpful host. Spacious, flat pitches, many with tables/fire pits. Spotless loos and showers. Handy for the village and the Cumbria Way. Great value, highly recommended.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Nice location within a charming village. Good base for exploring a very beautiful area of Northern England. Clean loos, and showers. Away from noisy main roads. Great value for money. Friendly site owners. Dog friendly. Motorcyclist friendly. Little shed for washing the dishes. Very well organised site.

Disliked Noisy Skoda owning selfish campers that repeatedly slam their car door before 6am in the morning. But that is most certainly not the site owners fault, but I just wanted to get it off my chest!

Local attractions

When in Cumbria you’ll surely be wanting some time near the lakes, so factor in a trip to Bassenthwaite (about a 35-minute drive from the site) for watery walks. Derwentwater’s about the same distance for standup paddleboarding, windsurfing and canoeing, and Pooley Bridge is the place for sailing past peaks on the famed Ullswater steamers (35 minutes’ drive). The countryside is of course fabulous around here, but history can also be had at spots like Carlisle Castle and Mirehouse House and Gardens about 30 minutes away. And if you’re toying with the idea of eloping, you can be up at Gretna Green in about 40 minutes. In this land of plenty, guests are also close to the coast – Solway’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is about 40 minutes by car for views over the sea, with the beaches being a tad further if you want to get your toes stuck into some sand.
