  • Simple campsite under a mile from the foot of Lake Windermere
  • In the hamlet of Newby Bridge; 20 minutes' drive from Coniston Water
  • Within 10 minutes' walk of a spa and lakeside Fell Foot Park
Conveniently located in Newby Bridge, a small hamlet at the foot of Lake Windermere in the Lake District National Park, Sandfold Pop-Up Camping is a simple site in Cumbria. This spot is under a mile from the National Trust-run Fell Foot Park, an attractive lakeside spot with ample watersports options; it's also within easy reach of a spa hotel where you can while away an afternoon enjoying a proper pampering. This no-thrills site has toilet facilities only. It’s set in a classic Cumbrian landscape that’s green and rural, dotted with trees and with extensive views over neighbouring hills. There's also a small stream that runs through the property on the edge of the pitching field for extra peaceful vibes. For dinner out, you can walk down into the village to eat at one of its several hotels, which welcome non-residents. Self-catering is also an option, and the closest supermarket is located in Ulverston (15 minutes' drive). Need inspiration for days out? Millerbeck Light Railway, which may prove highly popular with the kids, is under a mile away, while Coniston Water – a scenic spot that makes a nice change of scene from Windermere – is a 20-minute drive from base.

Local attractions

Brought the kids? After riding the rails for a while at Millerbeck Light Railway (a few minutes' drive or walk), you can take them to inspect the historic vehicles at the Lakeland Motor Museum (five minutes' drive), or alternatively, for a really special treat, to see the exotic animals and birds on show at the popular South Lakes Safari Zoo (20 minutes). If your travel team is of an energetic persuasion, you might appreciate an exhilarating treetop adventure at Go Ape Grizedale (20 minutes) or watersports whizzing around the lake at Fell Foot Park (10 minutes' walk). For more gentle exercise, take a stroll round the paths of Chapel House Wood (20 minutes' walk) or amble around Kendal (20 minutes) and its independent shops and eateries. Further afield, you can visit Ambleside (35 minutes) with its Roman fort and poetic connections, natural wonders like Stock Ghyll Force waterfall (40 minutes) or the historic city of Lancaster with its castle and cathedral (30 minutes).

Unpowered grass tent site (two person)

Liked: Views of the mountains were pretty from the campsite
Very basic facilities - toilets are 2x portaloos, water is a single tap
Single point entry/ exit became very muddy due to the rain - would be concerned the car would get stuck if this had gotten worse/ if we stayed longer
Also campsite is near a main road, however this does mean there are shops and towns available close by
Did not meet staff but received a friendly text and they were readily available for advice

Unpowered grass tent site (two person)

Liked: A field with a lovely view is sometimes all you need. The best kind of no-frills campsite; Greta value, not too busy, plenty of room between tents, not noisy, and the portaloos were kept in decent condition. Excellent location for Newby Bridge, Fell Foot park, and access to the lake for paddle boarding. Will definitely be back!
