  • Peaceful, remote site on a working farm on the Solway Coast
  • Silloth 15 minutes’ drive; Bassenthwaite Lake half an hour
  • About 100 metres from Allonby Beach; views as far as Skiddaw Mountain
If you live for long walks on the beach – perhaps accompanied by your four-legged companion, and maybe at sunset (which can be pretty spectacular along this stretch of the Solway Coast, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) – Old Kiln Farm, on a working farm about 100 metres from Allonby Beach, might well be the place for you. This peaceful, family-friendly site has far-reaching views over a dramatic landscape of intertidal flats and sand dunes to the west, and mossy lowlands and Skiddaw Mountain, in the Lake District, to the east. Oh, and the Scottish coastline and hills to the north. It feels pretty remote here – but you’re not completely cut off from the world: the coastal village of Allonby is less than five minutes’ drive away (if you fancy walking, it will take you about 20 minutes), with its convenience store, ice-cream parlour, fish and chip shop and a couple of pubs. There is also a bike-hire place in the village, so you can explore the coast on two wheels and get to places like Silloth in about 40 minutes (15 minutes by car). As you pedal along the promenade here, keep your eyes peeled for porpoises off the coast. Back at the site, get the barbecue or the campfire going (firepits are provided but you'll need to bring your own wood), and settle down for an evening under the big Cumbrian skies. Amenities include a communal kitchen (with two gas burners, a sink and a range of crockery and cutlery) and a toilet block with showers. For an additional fee, site owners Vera and Phil also provide bedding.

Skiddaw camping pod

Liked: The pod was really comfortable and cosy. (This was important as we were glamping in the midst of a storm!) Our host was really friendly and welcoming. The shower was hot and worked well. The kitchen (in a shed) was basic but homely and the stove was good (although took a little while to master). There was a good range of board games, available from the kitchen, which we loved. This area of West Cumbria is unspoiled and the site is really close to a beautiful and quiet beach.

From the manager: Thank you I’m pleased you enjoyed it even in the storm and by god it was a storm 😊😂

Excellent site with everything you need accommodated for.

Binsey camping pod (two person)

Liked: We booked out all 4 (pods/shepherd's hut ), 6 adults ,4 children , 1 dog for a 2 night stay. On arrival the lovely Vera met us and showed /explained the facilities and eating places that accepted dogs. No need to pack beds, chairs, sleeping bags, tents , cooking equipment, just show up ...perfect 😁 The kitchen hut has everything you need. The children and dog had the freedom to run around safely as the area was all fenced and gated. The wind was trying it's best to spoil our stay but we circled the cars around the fire pit at night and had a fantastic first evening with the children and adults enjoying toasted marshmallows 😋 . The walk to the beach is 2 min , again mother nature blowing a hoollie but didn't stop my lot going in and body surfing the waves 😀. There was a windbreaker in the kitchen we used for our 2nd night as we moved up to the top field for our fire pit, again another successful evening . Each pod kitted out with a kettle, tea and coffee , TV and mini cooler. The "pee only toilets" are well situated and toilet rolls /hand sanitisers are supplied. The shower block and main toilet are clean and maintained and where you find the games/books/dvds stored. The beds in all the pods /hut are really comfortable and a good night's sleep was had by everyone . Out door seating and small table for each pod/hut on the decking area, plus a wooden patio table and another 4 chairs. For eating out we managed to get Pedro's takeaway from Maryport to deliver (our order was quite substantial) 5* for tasty food and lovely delivery man.The WiFi was as expected but 4G kicked in when it dropped out so no issues for us. We all spent every waking hour outside, conversation and laughter in bucket loads it was a totally chill experience and one we would do again next year. Thank you Vera for accommodating us 😊

Binsey camping pod (two person)

Liked: Everything was absolutely spot on, the pod was lovely and comfortable with an amazing view out of the circular window, the toilets were clean and the hut with all the cooking facilities in was a life saver to be honest, after getting there and realising I had forgotten most of my camping gear. However it did not matter because the site had everything we needed.

Local attractions

On the edge of the Lake District, Cockermouth (20 minutes) is a lively market town famed as the birthplace of William Wordsworth. Visitors can learn all about this Romantic poet at the National Trust-run Wordsworth House and Garden, on the banks of the River Derwent, before heading to the ruins of the 12th-century castle. A leafy path skirts the western shore of Bassenthwaite Lake (half an hour), where you might spot assorted birdlife, including curlews and ospreys. The lake is also a popular destination for watersports enthusiasts, or you can visit the Lakes Distillery for a guided tour with tastings of locally made whisky, gin and vodka. Stretching along the River Eden, Carlisle (45 minutes) is dominated by a medieval castle. Check out the tower where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner in the mid-1500s and Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life, with audiovisual displays on the regional infantry regiment.
