  • Historic stone-built hut in the Lake District National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Kendal, with easy access from the A6
  • Basic amenities; original fireplace, stone walls and beams
If you fancy following in historic footsteps, this is the place… legend has it that Bonnie Prince Charlie stopped over at The Tup Hull back in 1745 while travelling from Kendal to Shap. Back in those days, this stone hut was the local pub, and a handy place to stop over during journeys on the old Roman road. These days, it’s been converted into a cosy place to stay, within the Lake District National Park and close to the A6 – one of those locations that’s a bit away from the more crowded areas of Cumbria but still within easy reach of the north and south lakes. The hut’s conversion has been done with a light touch to preserve plenty of the original character – the walls, roof, fireplace and beams are all still intact. The hut’s set in its own little garden by the river, and the owners describe the setup as being like ‘camping but in a hut’. What that means is that it’s got a wood burning heater (bring your own wood) and metered electrical power (please bring a few pound coins along) but no running water, so you’ll need to bring bottled water. There are no showers here but there’s a toilet block that’s shared with the adjacent campsite. Don't forget to pack sleeping bags and pillows too. Bring along a barbecue if you’d like to sort out an alfresco meal; if you’d prefer that someone else did the cooking, there are a couple of pubs within a 15-minute drive. This is a dark sky area, so whatever you do for food, make sure you’ve left a bit of time for stargazing after sunset.

Liked: Everything about this place. This was my 4th visit to The Tup, 6th visit in all (2 camping trips) that tells you everything you need to know about Jane and her land. One of the nicest people you will ever meet and we have built a great relationship. It’s always great to see her and the Tup it’s self is an experience in its self. Such a great little building and even last night I was sitting looking about thinking about its little quirks. Trust me, if you love peace and quiet, you will love this place!

Disliked: Absolutely nothing

Liked: Prefect little getaway. The tup hup itself was amazing the kids loved it. With the log burner making it extra cosy. Set amongst a working farm with sheep walking around made it extra special for my little girl. My son was playing in the river just behind the Tup Hup which we couldn’t get him out of. Only a short drive to Kendal and Windermere. The hostess Jayne was lovely and made our stay very enjoyable and I’m sure we’ll be back again.

Disliked: Nothing. Not a dislike, but just make sure you bring an extra duvet or blanket in the colder months.

Lodge

Liked: Amazing location - breathtaking views everywhere, sheep everywhere, beautiful skies at night and close enough to so many landmarks! Peaceful - it really felt like we were the only people in the world in this little hut! Kids could play outside without us having to worry about them, gorgeous walks all around just watch out for the poo! Really cosy - we pushed both sofa beds together and on a night had the fire going with card games etc lovely family time (when the kids weren't fighting) electric metre there is really good we put four pound in and only spent about two after two nights there! Never done anything like this before, usually pitch a tent & camp that way but so glad we tried this little hut and will definitely be back!

Disliked: Toilets were a little bit smelly when flushing the chain!

Liked: Brilliant little bothy in a great location by a little river and we had the place all to ourselves apart from the sheep 😊 The wood burner is excellent, it was all we needed to boil the kettle and kept us very cosy of a night. Highly recommend a stay here anytime of year.

Lodge

Liked: I stayed in the Tup Hull. Fantastic quiet location and fantastic hut. We loved the sheep living amongst our home for the weekend. A short walk up the beck and you'll see a few waterfalls and generally great walking in the surrounding area. It really felt miles away from everything but just a stones throw from the A6. Kendal is nearby and we found a village (Burneside) that had a pub, shop and chippy is you need to stock up. Generally very accommodating and we have already been recommending it to friends.

Disliked: The only downside to the lovely sheep, was the sheep poo but it didn't affect out trip at all

Liked: Lovely site isolated with a pop up campsite in next field. Very small though so didn't notice they were there. Make sure you read the description it's accurate. No running water or showers but more than adequate toilet block. You will need ÂŁ1/ÂŁ2 coins for electric and bring your own logs in milder weather. None of this is an issue as it clearly states this in the description. Kids could free roam have a 10 and 11 year old boy. They loved it came back with treasures (horns and bones) they loved this me not so much. Follow the stream up and you will find a couple of lovely little waterfalls which are worth a visit and very close to site Stunning place really felt like we were alone, well other than the sheep lots and lots of sheep! Rather cure although the dog did decide it was a free for all buffet on the poop. Host was lovely and very welcoming will be visiting again! Keep doing what you are doing wonderful place.

Disliked: Leaving
