  • Award-winning park in a woodland setting and wildlife haven
  • A 10-minute drive from Carsington Water in the southern Lake District
  • Indoor pool, gym, steam room, soft play, bar and restaurant
How do you feel about staying among a whopping 28 acres of meadow and woodland cleverly converted into a garden landscaped by natural limestone, planted trees and blooming shrubs? Pretty great? Then amble over to award-winning Fell End Caravan Park in the southern Lake District’s Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As well as gorgeous grounds in a peaceful woodland setting, the site’s nature reserve is just the spot for setting your sights on local wildlife, whatever the season: species like owls, marsh harrier and roe deer have been seen throughout this green space. A whole other heap of countryside is nearby too, including the Forest of Bowland slightly south and the Yorkshire Dales National Park just to the east; easy access to Morecambe Bay is 20 minutes away by car as well for meanders across mudflats. As well as checking out the local coast and countryside, factor in time for sessions using the site’s fancy facilities, which include a leisure complex with a 15-metre indoor pool and a steam room. Not one for getting your hair wet? The air-conditioned fitness centre’s cardio equipment, free weights and training machines will appeal to gym junkies. While you exercise, send the kids off to get their own heart rates up in the indoor soft play area – or just skip leg day and swing by the bar and restaurant with the family for breakfast (or lunch and dinner).

Local attractions

Travellers to this park are already in the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so seeking strolls straight from site is a cinch. Wander to Lakeland Wildlife Oasis to gaze upon the snow leopards and lemurs (about a 20-minute walk) or keep an eagle eye out for birds indigenous to the UK at RSPB Leighton Moss (five minutes’ drive) instead. Fine to travel further? It’s worth dropping by one of the famed bodies of water in the Lake District while you’re in the area: Windermere, perhaps the most well known of the lot, is less than half an hour away by car. As this popular region has long been favoured by the aristocracy, classic country estates are all around as well: try Leighton Hall Estate (10 minutes) for a handsome house or get a glimpse of the National Trust’s stately Sizergh Castle and its grand gardens (15 minutes). Too rainy for days outdoors? Lancaster is 25 minutes away from the park for city shopping and sightseeing.

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: The site is great, with friendly staff. It’s only 5 minutes away from the coast (Arnside) and 20 mins from Windermere. The facilities are good; pool, bar, restaurant, play area and a nature reserve for small walks & animal watching.

Disliked: Would be nice if the restaurant had a slightly bigger selection. Although, there’s only a limited amount of staff on all day and I understand they have to draw the line somewhere. The toilets get a bit grubby overnight, but that’s the guests fault and they were clean again by 09:00.

Liked: Liked the swimming pool and nature reserve

Disliked: A bit limited for food at the bar, I think due to the time of year, things were starting to wind down maybe

From the manager: Hi, and thank you for the review. Really pleased you enjoyed the nature reserve and our leisure complex too. We've had a busy busy summer, so we needed to give our chef a little time to catch up - this did mean we had an Autumn season menu on for customers, but hopefully it still gave you enough choice.

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Was not that keen on the shepherds hut we stayed in, in Pod 6 but we knew when we booked it was a very basic hut, so no complaints and it never spoilt our trip. The staff where very friendly even though they seemed to be working super long hours, and the little complex on site was really good and would definitely suit families with younger children. Also the shower and toilet block was excellent.

From the manager: Ahh Ray, thank you for your lovely review, its appreciated. The whole team at Fell End really do take great pride in the park and facilities, and we are so pleased you'll be back to see us again soon!

Camping pod (no pets)

Liked: We stayed at pod 5 for 2 nights. A terrible location for those with children , which was our case. The pod was located in front of the street , just at the entrance to the park . With a very limited space , with cars passing on some occasions at over 30 km / h . It was a risk for our son . Plus the pod had a horrible smell of food and was full of spider webs on the outside . The place was super quiet and on the two occasions I needed to use the bathroom it was dirty .

From the manager: Oh dear! Sounds like we didn't get it quite right for you. Fell End is a woodland park, there are quite a few spiders this time of year - they are harmless and really just want to be left alone to feast on midgies - they love to weave their webs mid to late morning - so despite the pods getting a thorough clean every morning these cheeky little monkeys always seem to time it just right (or wrongly depending if you're a spider or housekeeping!). The access road outside is a single road, with a number of speedbumps along its length - the parks maximum speed is 5mph - this is signposted right across the park. Many of the campers and visitors on site are families so appreciate the need to keep their speed low, and do. We are sorry you felt the cars were not abiding to the speed limit - this is something we try and manage closely and carefully - we will review our signposting and reiterate to check-ins the need to manage their speed closely. We don't always get it 100% right, and really do appreciate it when you take the time to tell us, thank you. We really do pride ourselves on a perfect score at Fell End - and the majority of the time do get it right. I hope you'll reconsider and we'll see you back at Fell End soon.

Woodland 3 bedroom lodge (pet friendly)

Liked: Great location for nearby attractions. Excellent customer service from check in to check out. Lodge we stayed in was superb, like a home from home.

Disliked: We’re not advised in advance that the restaurant was closed that week. We needed to go out for food daily

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for leaving us a lovely review, we do work really hard ensuring our visitors have a practically prefect stay with us - it's incredibly rewarding when this effort is noticed by visitors and is really encouraging when its shared online, thank you. Our kitchen was closed for a short while, while the chef got his breath back after a really busy summer - he's back now! We'll try extra hard in the future to make sure the facilities are open longer and we are a little more overt with our communications.
