  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

What customers say

Moss Howe Farm gets props for its lovely, peaceful spot and super friendly staff. Guests loved the tidy facilities, onsite shop, and tasty pizzas. While most enjoyed the quiet vibe and ample pitches, a few mentioned low shower pressure and weak Wi-Fi. Great for walks and a chilled escape.

Power optional grass tent or campervan site (medium)

Liked Great campsite with spacious, well-kept pitches. Facilities were spotless, and the showers had excellent pressure and temperature. The owner was welcoming and personally showed me to my pitch. The on-site shop was well-stocked, with fair prices, some items even cheaper than the high street. Free wifi which was strong which was great for my girls. Bonus points for pizza nights on Wednesdays and Sundays. Easy to find and set in a peaceful location — would happily stay again.

Liked Quiet, isolated site. Good facilities, nice shop. Camp fires allowed.

Disliked Mixed rules about parking next to pitch, parking in car park seemed unnecessary.

Liked We really enjoyed our stay out Moss Howe Farm, warm welcome from the staff upon arrival and the staff were really friendly throughout our stay. Facilities really clean, showers are great for a a farm campsite. We stayed in an electric hook up pitch, very spacious and we were able to make it private. Ordered Pizzas on Saturday night which were amazing and ate them whilst sat in front of the fire pit. Shame the breakfast butties aren’t available on other days but I understand the demand may not be there. It was lovely to stay just outside of the more touristy spots such as bowness and Windermere. Will definitely be staying again

Liked Nice and quiet site in a slightly remote spot with good road access to all that the south lakes has to offer.
Exceptionally clean shower and toilet facilities.
A well stocked shop open morning and afternoon to 8pm.
Good walks locally, we took our dogs upto Simon's seat, a few miles round trip with spectacular views at the top across the Bay.

Powered grass tent or campervan site (large)

Liked We had a fantastic stay at this campsite! The location is absolutely amazing, with endless walking opportunities right from the doorstep of the farm – perfect for exploring the beautiful surroundings. The on-site shop is a lovely touch, stocking a range of local products; we especially enjoyed a delicious BBQ using their sausages and burgers. Pizza night was a highlight – very tasty – and the Sunday breakfast baps were a great treat. The toilet block is modern and clean, and we were pleasantly surprised by the strong WiFi signal throughout our stay.

Disliked We stayed on Pitch One, which is very close to the toilet block, and unfortunately, we were woken during the night by the sound of the hand dryer – it would be much better if this could be turned off overnight. Behind our pitch was a large picnic area strung with fairy lights, which looked lovely in the evening, but the lights stayed on all night and were quite bright inside our tent – having a cut-off time for these would really help. Lastly, the shower water pressure was very low and the on/off button was overly sensitive, so the water stopped every time we moved, which made showering a bit frustrating.

Lodge

Liked A well equipped, tidy and cosy camping hut with an excellent adjoining kitchen space that had everything we needed for a weekend walking in Lakes. The campsite was so peaceful (just like campsites used to be!) and the addition of a shop selling lovely coffee and a pizza van was welcome after a big walk on the Saturday! Great value and within easy reach of the fells without all the hecticness of places like Ambleside. Would love to return and explore the area really close to the campsite too. The Staff were all extremely helpful and friendly.

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
