  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

Liked: SO many amenities - arrival was smooth, host was very accommodating to our needs and more than happy to lend a hand. Shop is nicely stocked and reasonably priced, wood and fire burners available to hire. Pizza van and breakfast available which is nice when you want a chilled evening/morning.

Powered gravel campervan site

Liked: We had one of the 2 hardstanding pitches with electric hook up and stayed 2 nights. The site has a dated but extremely clean toilet/shower facilites (gents has 2 showers, 2 sinks, 2 toilets). We came on a Wednesday and they had a pizza van doing handmade pizza. The shop has a really good range of items at very good prices (compared to some sites where you can't justify the extortionate mark ups) and even freshly baked goods on certain days so it would be an idea to ring and ask what they are offering on the days you visit so you can plan ahead. There is also a communal fridge which you can use during your stay. Highly recommended!

Disliked: Site was fantastic and everything you could need but not brilliant if you want to walk your dog from the site as it's a bit isolated. Also, just make sure you check the route out to the site as the way we came (via sat nav) was a very tight single track for a good few miles and we very nearly got stuck. There are alternative routes so just double check!!

Unpowered grass tent site (medium)

Liked: The location was great, if a clear night the night sky was beautiful. The shop was well stocked and the staff were friendly and helpful. Good level pitches.

Disliked: Walks for dogs wasn’t great from the campsite. Showers were small so was hard to keep your cloths and shoes dry.

Liked: Friendly feel, accommodating staff with great facilities. Situated perfectly on the outskirts of the Lakes.

Disliked: Integrated camping and motorhoming made it difficult to know where to pitch up.

Terrace unpowered grass campervan site

Liked: As soon as we arrived at the site we knew we had found a little gem in the South Lakes with amazing views all around. The site has a lovely vibe. The staff are welcoming and the facilities were clean and tidy. The little yurt shop is great too offering camping essentials and wood to use on fire pits.

Disliked: Campervans parking up on the terrace should be directed to park perpendicular to the track (not parallel as some were cheekily taking up other people's pitch space). This was all sorted with no issues other than a slightly awkward conversation with our neighbours upon arrival. Unfortunately the wifi does not reach up to the terrace pitch that we were allocated, but the wifi down at the shop was fast. It would be a real treat to see some vegan options available in the shop and breakfast/pizza stall too.

Liked: Lovely location, quite small sight with stunning views. Sight is well kept and clean. Staff are helpful and the Wednesday evening pizza van is an excellent touch. Such a layer back sight with not lots of rules. Can have camp fire and their are pits about to use.

Disliked: No pub in a short walk 2 miles way and not the best road for walking on. Shop did not have fresh bread in mornings could be a little better stocked.

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
