  • On the banks of Coniston Water in a convenient Lake District location
  • A 35-minute drive to Lake Windermere and two-hour walk to the Old Man
  • Playground, shop, laundry facilities, bathroom facilities and wifi
Wanting a walking hol in the Lake District? Make Coniston Experience Freedom Glamping in Cumbria, right on the shores of Coniston Water, your base for strolls aplenty through this famed landscape. The site is a 35-minute drive from Windermere, the most well-known lake of the lot, and a two-hour amble from the peak of the 2,634-foot-high Old Man of Coniston fell. Wanders through woodlands can be had straight from the park, while aquatic adventures start at Coniston's Waterhead Pier, under a 10-minute drive away. Try windsurfing and canoeing, as well as dinghy sailing and steamboat rides… or simply stay put soaking up the scenery on site while the kids scamper around the playground and go gung ho for the organised activities. Sticking to dry land, cycling, pony trekking and abseiling are all available in the area too; to navigate rope bridges and whoosh across zipwires above the trees, Go Ape in Grizedale Forest is a half-hour drive away. Not up for any of these most energetic expeditions? As Lake District aficionados well know, this locale also has lots on offer if you’re into lazing. Bookworms can mosey around Beatrix Potter’s old home, a 40-minute drive from the site, while picnickers might want to make it as far as the National Trust's Aira Force waterfall, an hour away. You can fill your hamper at the park’s shop, or head over to Coniston village (a 10-minute drive) for the supermarket.

Glamping microlodge

Liked: The place was really great, the pods were really clean, staff were really helpful as well. Everything was organised properly and you get an email with some reminders ahead of the booking.

Disliked: Nothing! One comment I have though is we had a hard time firing up the stove - apparently there's a trick to it but we never got the smaller stove to work 🤣

Glamping cabin

Liked: Lovely site, with lots of facilities including laundrette, shop, play areas, hot food van. The glamping cabins were alot bigger than anticipated which was a lovely surprise. It had most items needed for a comfortable stay including dishwasher, 2x disposal bbqs & a fully equipped kitchen. Easy access to Coniston water for a day on the lake.

Disliked: No hair dryer (however I think you could hire one fro. reception, but I didn't bother) Just a few housekeeping issues - dishwasher had a awful drain smell, Mould on the cabin curtains, mould round the sink & bottom of shower cubicle. This didn't impact our stay!

Glamping microlodge

Liked: Wonderful location for Conniston Lake and only a 30 minute drive to Windermere. The accommodation was the perfect place to stay prior to taking on The ROC England on 7th Sept. Really clever micro lodge design and hope to return with my brother and his family at some point.

Camping pod

Liked: Closeness to the beautiful coniston lake which was perfect for swimming. Beautiful location surrounded by the forest. If you want a peaceful stay then avoid schools holidays as a popular destination for families. Though I will say all families while we was there adhered to the noise limit and didn’t have a effect on our stay. Amenities close by and immaculate.

Disliked: Beds in the pods very uncomfortable so I’d advise bring a blow up mattress to put on top.

Glamping cabin

Liked: Amazing cabin had everything provided and the quality of the cabin was amazing. The site was lovely and quiet with lovely walks to the coniston lake. The cabin had all mod cons that is needed for your holiday and staff was super friendly and very helpful. Recommended for families with young children as they also had play areas for the kids which was lovely.

Disliked: Only issue which is not a issue really but the cabins did not have WiFi when we believed it did. Apart from that lovely enjoy stay

Glamping microlodge

Liked: The location was excellent with a short stroll to both Coniston Water and Coniston village centre. Very well thought through design of accommodation which was compact but very functional. Decking area and bar-b-q area extended the accommodation nicely.

Disliked: Nothing.

Glamping microlodge

Liked: Everything. From us needing to rearrange the booking to adding the kids on the site could not be more helpful or accommodating. Arrived home today after 2 nights and we have definitely found our go to stay in the lake district. Peaceful site in beautiful surroundings. Well stocked shop and friendly staff. The microlodge glamping pods are so well equipped and have absolutely everything you need. Lovely touch of coffee, tea, biscuits etc. Better shower than the one we have at home! 😂 Close to the water and plenty of places to eat. Can also recommend the Crown Inn pub to eat, delicious food! To top it off once we returned home realised we'd left all our walking boots, rang and spoke to someone straight away who were more than helpful and said they would box them up for us no problem if we wanted to arrange a collection. Will be recommending this place to all our friends and family. Thank you for a lovely stay 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Local attractions

If you're seeking slightly different leisure days in the Lake District, John Ruskin’s House at Brantwood, with its unique stone xylophone, is 20 minutes' drive from the park. The neo-Gothic Victorian Wray Castle is half an hour away, while Rydal Hall Gardens – also 30 minutes – has an open-air sculpture trail to potter along. To see exotic animals instead of art, South Lakes Safari Zoo, 45 minutes from the site, is home to everything from soaring macaws to bounding kangaroos, while the Lingholm Estate (1 hour and five minutes) has alpacas to accompany you on short walks. Sticking closer to the park, sort your Lake District views by driving to the Tarns (20 minutes away) and meandering as long as you please. Once you’re done with above-ground explores, Cathedral cave, a series of connected quarries, is also reachable within a 20-minute drive. If you're up for setting your goals higher – perhaps as high as Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain – start this bucket-list trek after driving for an hour and 20 minutes to the beginning of the trail.
